I've yet in my 53 years to hear someone here in Ireland refer to Derry as Londonderry. It's Derry.

It's definitely Derry.

I'd never say Londonderry for the city but I might for the county.

Ohh controversial Wink

I say both and have used Londonderry and Derry in the same sentence before without thinking. Like treacle I'd be more inclined to say the county with the L and the city without. All what you've been raised with isn't it?

Yeah that’s actually the policy on correspondence in both the last places I’ve worked in- City of Derry, Co. Londonderry. I think it’s a good compromise. I think the only person I’ve heard call the city Londonderry in the last ten years is Gregory Campbell.

I was thinking of Gregory Campbell too. Grin

Which is a shame because life is better when Gregory Campbell doesn't enter your thoughts, isn't it?

It's Derry, never, ever Londonderry. I haven't heard that name in years and even then it was only British newsreaders who used it. I don't think I've ever heard anyone in real life use it.

Aaagh why did you have to mention Gregory Campbell?
I once worked in a restaurant where he used to come with his family. He has loads of kids, but it never looked a bundle of laughs at the table understatement of the year

Ah yeah, my ex MP. Fleggory Campbell, professional craic vacuum. What a charmer.

I have lived and worked in Derry. The only people using the L word are doing it to make a political point. I once had to send a (not local) locum home as she kept correcting patients and staff when they said “Derry”. “Actually you’ll find it’s LONDONderry”. When the first patient told her to fuck off I had to have her in for a little chat. Precious little madam cost herself a potential 6 month’s work. Who does that? I mean, really Confused

Likewise. Although, it says Londonderry on my birth cert and if I want to say that's where I was born, I think it's a bit cheeky of other people to tell me I can't! Like you say, ZepellinBend, controversial!

ohalalala As you ask: there is a Londonderry in Yorkshire and another in the West Midlands.

I take it the tune is still the Londonderry Air?

It's a bit reminiscent of Southern Africa where Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe and Salisbury is Harare and Lourenco Marques is Maputo: but the Victoria Falls are still the Victoria Falls because business is business!

Old thread I know, but I live in NI and know plenty who say Londonderry for both city and county. I'm from Dublin and it always sounds odd to my ear, but ho hum, tolerance and all that. Wink

Have a feeling that I once heard Londonderry is actually technically more correct for the county than Derry, something about when it was officially named. The city is more arguable. I'm far too lazy to go Google it though.
