Silver for the Irish Rowers at the Rio Games

I'm so happy for the brothers O'Donovan from Skibbereen in Co. Cork for winning silver in the men's lightweight double sculls today.

Their post-race interviews are just brilliant!

"Mick Conlon said he'd box the head off us if we didn't win the gold" I mean it's pure craic altogether.

Anyone who manages to reference the tragic lack of Kerr Pinks in the Olympic Village while describing rowing in an Olympic final as a bit of craic gets a thumbs up from me.

Their bon mots also seem to have spawned a new line of Hairy Baby tee shirts.

Is that what they said, ComedyWing? I couldn't make it out. I was watching on rte and the fella with the commentator was tearful, Neville someone. I had a little tear myself. And when they dragged themselves up to go and congratulate the French lads, I was so proud of them. They sound like great lads. Imagine the celebrating in Skibereen tonight!

I'm delighted for them. Two lovely lads, their family should be very proud of them - not just their achievements but their manners too- how courteous they were to the winning French team. It brought a tear to my eye.

Apparently at the end of an interview one of the boys said 'Tiochfaidh ár lá'
It just means our day will come ( to win gold) and the Daily Mail is now linking it with the IRA.
Yes the IRA and Sinn Fein use the saying but so do countless other everyday folk. It denotes an optimism.
Grrr. Just let the boys enjoy the limelight and stop trying to cause controversy Daily Mail et all.

I heard the "Tiochfaidh ár lá" comment and understood it that their day will come...to win the gold, and nothing else sinister could be construed from it.

As their race was going on, twitter was going mental with #PullLikeADog as that was their plan for the race - keep their heads down and pull like a dog!!!

Well, the phrase has a definite republican history - it's often been said in the dock during the trials of PIRA members, for instance - and they also said something joky about it being nice to beat the Brits in one of the heats in the year that's in it. I don't have a problem with either thing. You would need a tin ear for context and humour to think that two nice rowers from Skib clutching a silver medal apiece and visibly delighted with life and steak for breakfast were advocating a return to republican armed struggle.

Such grand lads. I watched the final from a pub in Skibb and it was just fantastic. Can't wait for the homecoming party. They're already repainting the rowing clubhouse in readiness. Coastal and river rowing is incredibly popular here and even my 75yr old ICA pal still gets her boat out regularly.

It was a fantastic result for the brothers and their team. My niece and nephew are really involved in rowing and it's been brilliant for them to see rowers they know achieving such heights.

Don't forget the wonderful women's pair, Lynch & Lambe who while they don't win medals, are equally impressive.

It's the big homecoming party tomorrow night for the lads.

The county and local councils have got involved and it promises to be a showstopping event. I'm really looking forward to it.
