Mum has Covid - need talking down

Am massively panicking. Mum is in her 70's and was in the middle of chemotherapy when she developed a temperature and breathlessness last week. She convinced herself she was just tired from the chemo until we forced her to go to hospital when they admitted her. She's had two tests which have come back negative. But the dr's think from the X-Rays that it's likely to be Covid. Am so worried She is on oxygen, anti-biotics, and is getting slowly better but still can't walk any distance without getting out of breath.

I feel so helpless as I can't even visit. Have tried to raise her spirits and tell her she is in the best place etc etc but inside I am panicking.

I'm so sorry, I would be feeling exactly the same. I don't have any words of wisdom I'm afraid, just take it one day at a time and try to stay positive

Its extremely hard being on the outside looking in - been there done that - but you can send her things in and also if she is able to talk through a smart phone or ipad they sometimes have the ipads funded by a charity to use with patients who can't be visited. Its positive she is testing negative whatever they think and also that she is responding to treatment - send her in some nice food stuffs to keep her intake up (hospital food is so boring) make sure she has some things to do that she likes. It must be a worrying time for you but it sounds like she’s being well looked after and she’s doing well. Try and focus on the right here and now. I hope she’s much better very soon. It always helps me to remember than even in the over 90 age group the survival rates over over 85 percent. I’ve also seen threads before of positive Covid stories where people have reported that vulnerable relatives have coped really well with Covid. I hope she’s home very soon.

Thankyou everyone. It does help knowing that old and vulnerable have managed to survive this. It was just the worst case scenario we could have imagined when she was going through chemo. God knows where she's picked it up from, she's barely left the house.

Sorry to hear this, I guess it could be a different flu virus or chest infection causing similar symptoms. You're right though, she's in the right place, and hopefully she will be feeling better soon.

I was speaking to my ICU Dr friend today and he says that so many more people in hospital with covid are getting better than in the 1st lockdown. He says patients tend to be less unwell when admitted and they now have better knowledge about how to treat people eg placing them on their front.

He says that so many more people are surviving this now.
