Universities: are they quarantining?

Boarding school pupils from overseas were asked to arrive weeks early and quarantine. Is there any equivalent for university students from overseas who are staying in student halls? Or have the unis washed their hands of this and left it up to govt quarantine procedures?

I’m not sure I’m understanding. Do you mean extra quarantine over and above what the government require from travellers coming from abroad?

My uni is opening up halls early at no charge for students arriving from overseas who need to quarantine. Far from washing their hands of it, my institution is actually listening to our world class epidemiologists and virologists and implementing stricter measures than the Government guidelines.

That is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. Or course the name of the uni would be even better :)

DS2 is about to start a uni with a high number of overseas students. He's been chatting to them online and they've told him they have to arrive two weeks early and self isolate in their rooms - strict quarantine, before starting very socially distanced study with all lectures and some seminars moved to Zoom. DS1 is starting a uni in a catered hall, where they will have food delivered to their doors and have to eat it alone in their rooms. It sounds bloody miserable to me. I completely appreciate that Covid has to be managed but there will be a MH problem hard on the back of it, which worries me a lot.

I thought some students couldn’t get flights to UK.
They’ve opened up more places for UK students.
Quarantine should be as per government guidelines.

Yes, overseas students need to quarantine for 2 weeks.

My university is certainly not 'washing its hands', where do you get that assumption from OP? On the contrary, we're washing our hands all the time... In addition to many other sensible and well thought through measures going above and beyond Govt advice.

OP - it would be much easier if you state of the name of your university rather than asking other people for theirs. You’ll find a faster answer that way.

No assuming, it was just part of my question whether they were or not. It is possible some unis might not have provided free accommodation for 2 weeks before term for those who need to quarantine for example.

It'll be tough if it's that strict. Teenagers away from home for the first time are more likely to suffer homesickness if they can't enjoy themselves.

My niece is off in a couple of and she's staying in Halls. They have talked about social distancing, but I don't really see how it's possible.

Then why didn't you just ask if universities were quarantining overseas students or not?

Yes mine are funding places in halls for overseas students to quarantine.

Fuck off if you think you have the right to demand to know where I go.

I’ve seen lots of references to international students quarantining on the WIWIKAU Facebook group at various universities.

I have a DS going to university this year - out of the 15 or so universities that I know of because he or friends are going, they all have plans for their overseas students - quarantining and support for them whilst quarantining. The information is pretty freely available on their websites.

Two of DD's friends are already back and have quarantined. She has one friend to come from USA now, who couldn't travel before as accommodation only just sorted.
