Any lawyers out there worried about redundancy?

Our firm has furloughed most of our support staff now and the work seems to be drying up.

Anyone else in this position? I am a tax lawyer.

I'm guessing there will be less corporate clients needing tax advice unfortunately - wouldn't it be true that the volume of work in your specialism goes up and down with the health of the economy generally? Any chance of reinventing yourself as an insolvency specialist?

A bit. I’m an employment lawyer in a fairly large firm and we are absolutely flat out. But the decimation in other areas of the business is alarming.

DMum is a member of the support team for a large local corporate firm and they have recently made redundancies across both support staff and solicitors. DMum has been made redundant, but it's clear from how it's been handled that this has been in the offing a long time and coronavirus only provided them with a potential excuse to try and avoid industry gossip. Unfortunately for them it's not worked!

My firm has furloughed support staff in some departments (property etc). I’m in litigation and we’re still busy, so we’ve been told business as usual for the time being. That can’t continue indefinitely however unless the courts start doing more. I’m feeling fairly secure at the moment but it seems the situation could change very quickly.

I'm a childrens lawyer and it seems a very different picture dependant on your specialism. I am as busy as ever however our conveyancing dept are all on furlough.
