I wonder how many people will die in India from starvation from 21 day lockdown, it make my problems insignificant in comparison. We’re so lucky go live in the UK

I know... it is so worrying. I saw apocalyptical video of people in New Delhi trying to leave the city. Words won’t describe this panic and how desperate these people were. I am feeling so sorry for them... They are left all alone.

This is why all the whining here gets so annoying. Wahhh my civil liberties and feelings!! Ok, its shit in a lot ways, but we're lucky to live here in a country that are able to take measures to keep many of us safer and help ensure we may also have jobs and lives to go back to if we're lucky.

I think developing countries attempting to tackle coronavirus by enforcing lockdowns will prove to be absolutely catastrophic. I saw they're doing the same thing in Nigeria now. Many of these countries do not have a national health service to overwhelm, they can't pay people's wages while they sit at home and many people live in townships and slums where it is impossible to enforce social distancing. Many of these countries have a much younger demographic profile than we do so the majority of the population will not be high-risk. As you say OP - there are plenty of people who will die of hunger before they die of coronavirus if they cannot leave their houses. Domestic violence, increase in crime etc. will also be a major issue.

I'm so scared for their situation and what will arise from it. Effects even worse than the virus.

Absolutely terrifying seeing all those migrant workers being forced to leave Delhi to walk back to their villages.. potentially already infected and taking it back to tiny villages with no access to healthcare. :-(

They closed everything within 4 hours notice 😲 How are people supposed organise getting home and in doors in that time, even if you were not poor. 800 million poor in India, I wonder how many will die of starvation in that time? It puts what we are going through into perspective.

I went to India a few years ago. The poverty was heartbreaking, and that was in a normal situation.

I'm currently sitting in a centrally heated house, with food in the fridge, hot water, tv and internet. This thread has reminded me that despite not being able to go out, I'm very fortunate.

And lockdown in India who is that protecting, not the poor, it will be the rich top 1% over 50s who will benefit from this.

I’d always had my thoughts skewed by the West travelling to India as part of a self journey etc

But reading The White Tiger made me think differently

I’ve never been and have low knowledge I admit

They won’t have any money to get food, yes the well off can still get food, they will probably have it delivered but i’m sure the they are allowed to go out and get food like here.

I’ve been to India a few times. There is no way that social distancing can happen there. That is a luxury Indians could only dream off. Coronavirus is going to be catastrophic for them. And, yes, it does make me annoyed when people here complain about how their rights have been taken away and they have to sit on their sofa.

30% of the Indian population is under 30 and theoretically should not be affected by Coronavirus. However the problem is that Indians suffer ageing related diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes at a much younger age than other countries (often starting in our twenties) due to rubbish healthcare, lack of awareness, and genetic prevalence. Coronavirus would have caused a massacre amongst young people had a lock down not been implemented.

However a bigger problem that has now been highlighted is that despite having more home grown billionaires than any country (save for China and the USA) it has the lowest tax revenues. If this virus has one positive it will be to force India to sort their disgusting tax inequalities out.

Is there anything we can do? Anyone know if there is an aid agency helping that we could donate to?

Report
Gin96 · 30/03/2020 12:12

@GrumpyHoonMan I can’t see India’s tax system changing any time soon. The poor will die of starvation long before the Coronavirus.

The rich can isolate in their homes and have food delivered to them. It’s not them that India is protecting. It is it’s young middle-class / poor (but not homeless) population. Nothing will cause civil rest faster than deaths amongst unhealthy under 30s.

They may have a house but if they can’t work they can’t eat, I don’t think India have any social security system in place at the moment, they did start offering free meals twice a day but were overwhelmed so had to stop.
