withdrawal method

Was wondering if i's possible to fall pg using the withdrawal method as a form of contracception? Had sex on the the 5th which according to my cycle was in the middle of ovulation and for the past 10 days I've been experiencing backache and continuos pain in my lower abdomen ( at some point I thought it was appendix). Sometimes the pain is soo bad I need to take painkillers.
Has any of you got pregnant using this method?

yes you can definitely get pregnant. Withdrawal method is not a realiable form of contraception at all, particularly if used at ovulation time

withdrawal is a lot less reliable than pill or condoms (about 75% effective), so yes it is very possible. I wouldn't assume all this pain was due to PG though, could be other reasons.

IME using the withdrawal method is a guaranteed method of getting pregnant(twice)

My period is supposed to be due tomorrow if I stand to my last 3 periods ( for the past 3 months I've had a 26 days cycle but the previous ones were of 24-32 and 28) so I just have to wait and see.
Got pg while on the pill with ds ( was suffering from bad constipation and started to use strong laxative without cosulting the gp )and only realised at 9 weeks so I can't really compare and have no clue about pregnancy symptoms!!

friend of mine got pregnant using this but have to admit we use it and so far so good 13 years and no mishaps

I had a look on the internet but it's all so confusing!!!Some people says it is possible. other sayst it is not possible. Who's right?

We have used it successfully for 5 years since DS1 was born. DS2 was planned, and we went back to using it with no proplems.

However, it is always possible to get pg as no method of contraception is 100% reliable.

I've read it's about 85% reliable (which is the same as condoms if they are not used exactly as the instructions say).

If getting pg would be a disaster then use another method.

surprisenumber3: LOL!!!my hubby told me the same. I have to say that we've been using it for the past two years with no accidents. We talked about having another one and he was adamant he didn't want another one soo soon so IF I am pg I'm not sure he'll react that well

Remember it only takes one sperm to fertilise an egg and a small amount of sperm can sometimes be released before ejaculation. I used it successfully for a few years too but hey ho. It wasn't successful this time around.

Yeah, my DH hasn't taken it well. Even to the point where he thought we should talk about getting rid of it (the thought of us having 4 kids between us terrified him), but he is coming round now...I think.

I do keep reminding him though that he told me I wouldn't get pregnant and that my egg was there anyway and it wasn't my fault he fertilised it

I am sorry to say this, but IMO "withdrawal method" is NOT a method of contraception but one possible way of trying to conceive!! It is SO unreliable that I would really encourage you to do a test ASAP so you know where you stand.

I am with all the husbands/partners/boyfriends out there who "will not consider another method"! It is not them who will be stuck with a decision what to do if an unwanted pregnancy occurs and they will not necessarily have to live whichever way that decision went!!

IMO it should only ever be considered if a couple wish to space their children but would not be too upset if they conceived anyway. For all of you that it has worked for for several years, thank your lucky stars! I am really not sarky/flippant about this, but I deal with too much misery in regards to this kind of misinformation in my professional life to not feel strongly about it.

"As safe as condoms" - right and wrong. 85% quoted for condoms is an average. An inexperienced couple fumbling in the back of a car have a MUCH higher chance of getting it wrong then a longterm couple who have had lots of practice using condoms. And then there is the prevention of STDs...

Sorry again, Luce, rant over, but please do test so you can consider your options. If you are not pregnant (and do no want to be) please, please, please change method of contraception.

I agree Mummyfor3, if I hadn't wanted any more children I definately would not rely on this 'method' of contraception. You only have to look at very large Catholic families to see its success!

No need to apology mummyfor3!! I agree with you, completely. I wouldn't mind, honestly. I'd rather wait another year or so but it wouldn't be a tragedy!!!He's my dp who doesn't want at all and thinks that this is a very safe method Anyway, I've been having some spotting since late last night but still waiting for the REAL thing to happen

what I find weird is this pain in my lower back that's been bothering me for the past 10+days and the fact that what is supposed to be period pain is very very mild. but we'll see. It might just be a very light period

No test yet, I am going to give it another few days. If things don't change I'll do a test

Seriously Luce, with both my pregs I've had moderate to severe period type pains including backache

we use this method and have never had an accident - we have 3 dc all planned - I wouldn't use it if we definitely DID NOT want anymore kids though, it is too risky.
