Is this my first period after stopping the demon depo?!!!

Hi all, I had my last depo shot 6 weeks ago now, I came off in preparation to TTC number 2, we aren't particularly trying but we aren't preventing if that makes sense, we are currently just of the mindset that it would take me forever to get a period after all the horror stories I've read about the depo!

How long did it take you ladies to get your first period? And how did you know it was a 'proper' period? I've woken up this morning and seem to be bleeding, should I count this as cycle day 1? Does this mean the depo is coming out my system or could it be some kind of withdrawal bleed and not a real period? If it is my period, I'm surprised it happened after only 6 weeks! Thank you!

As far as I knew the Depo shot lasts 8-13 weeks so should still be acting as a contraceptive at the moment if you only had it 6 weeks ago. If so then that would mean that this bleed is more likely a breakthrough bleed than a period as you shouldn't have ovulated.

I can't help with respect to how long it takes to get your first period after coming off of it, but I know that with the Depo shot it varies massively from person to person.

Hi thanks for replying! Sorry I should have mentioned that my last shot ran out 6 weeks ago, not that I had a shot 6 weeks ago, I'm a new poster and I don't know how to edit my original 🙈 I think I had my last shot end of March. Does this change things? Thank you!

Ahhh, that makes sense. In that case it definitely could be your first period or a withdrawal bleed. If I were you and if you're not in a huge rush to conceive then I'd class this a Day 1 and see how long until your next bleed. If it's somewhere in the 25-40 day range you can be reasonably convinced that your cycle has started back up. Although it could still take a little while to settle into a predictable rhythm.

If you're in a hurry to start TTC immediately then I'm not sure if you've heard of them before but I'd recommend buying some cheap OPKs.

Also, annoyingly I don't think there is an edit function on Mumsnet.

My last Depo was April 2020. I got my first period in August but since then it's hardly stopped. I had one break of two weeks then since the end of November I've been almost bleeding constantly. I checked in with the doctors who said it could just be a rush of hormones 🤔 anyone else had this?

It took me two years to start ovulating after depo. But I think this is usually long because the doctor referred me for infertility treatment after 18 months so they clearly didn't think it was just the depo. I finally conceived after 2.5 years. Good luck!
