Hi guys,

I want to get pregnant. It will be my second, and DP's third. Between us our forth.

However I am still in my probation period. I have four months left, would I be really silly to start ttc now. I don't want to wait, because I feel it's gonna take a long time. But I'm scared if it does happen soon, it'll risk job security.

But it's eating me up inside. I'm so broody. I had s dream last night I was 20 weeks pregnant. Woke up sad because I wasn't and I've been moody all day.

Help?

I’d check your maternity policy before making a decision as it might have deadlines as to when you have to notify your employer you’re pregnant and are there pay differences at all. But assuming your only limitation is the probation I’d probably wait until your 2 months from the end personally but come off any birth control now and use other contraception in the meantime so your body has time to adjust.

Well it depends a little bit on how family friendly the employer is. But not much.

From the point of view of getting SMP you are OK so long as you were in this job on the first day of your last menstrual period before you conceive. You'd be unlikely to get any enhanced package though.

From the point of view of job security - whilst maternity status is a protected characteristic, you can lose your job without the employer having to give a reason any time in the first 2 years. It doesn't matter whether the probation period is 2 weeks or 6 months - probation only affects your contractual notice. A canny but sexist employer will find a way to let you go in some way that shows it's not because of the pregnancy even though it is.

I wouldn't wait. If your employers turn out to be bastards then you don't want their poxy job anyway. But maybe they will be lovely.

Fertility can't be guaranteed and can take a while. Every month that goes by is important.

I wouldn’t wait tbh. Fertility isn’t guaranteed, even if you’ve already had children previously. It might take longer than you hope and so you want to start asap really. An employer cannot sack you for being pregnant but if you’re employed by someone who is a total dick, they will find some way of getting rid of you without saying it’s to do with you being pregnant. I wouldn’t want to work for someone like that anyway to be honest! I would start. If you conceive, you conceive. My little sister got pregnant (unplanned) about 2 weeks after starting a new job and had 6 months probabtion ahead of her. She’s still there now and is only a few weeks away until her probabation period ends and there isn’t any sign that they will be getting rid of her.
