TTC at 39 - how long should it take?

DH and I recently decided to start TTC. We have only tried for one month and i just got my period so it didn't work. DH has 2 kids, 12 and 10, from his first marriage, and I have two kids, 7 and 5, from my first marriage, all of whom were conceived pretty much immediately! Because of this, we were expecting to conceive right away and it didn't happen. I am now thinking it may not be that easy at all as we are both older and worried it may not happen at all. Does anyone know how long it might take?

Unfortunately noone is able to answer your question as it really could be soon, next year, three years time, never. Some people on here are exceptionally lucky and get pregnant easily at your age and have healthy pregnancies. Other people fail to conceive, others have multiple pregnancies as egg quality is reduced. You are going to have to walk your own journey here and hope for the best.

There is a TTC over 40 thread that might be useful. I would also recommend supplements for you and your husband and fertility acupuncture was also very helpful in my case.

Good luck xx

At 37, I stopped taking my pill in February as was getting married in June and having been on the pill for 14 years, thought it might take a while.
DH and I used condoms right up to the week before the wedding when I was a bit 'throw caution to the wind' and I conceived in that week!
I think it's luck of the draw but I had been taking folic acid and vitamin D tablets in the months previous.
Good luck!

Anything within a year is normal.

Do you track ovulation? I'm 36 and got pregnant straightaway like this.
I think fertile couples under 35 should get pregnant by the 3rd cycle if tracking ovulation. Not sure what it is after that but As long as your both fertile it shouldn't take long.

Thanks all. No idea why I thought I would conceive first time! I have not been tracking ovulation but usually know the days when I am although not the exact day which might be helpful. Is there any way if pinpointing the exact day?
