Strange cycles/late ovulation..opinions required!

Just wondering whether anyone has been through the same fun and games and I am going through!

Firstly bit of background:

DS conceived first month of trying (after leaving 2 months from coming off the pill and my cycle settling to 29 days)

This time round: Came off pill end of September/beginning October
AF- 11 November
AF-12 December (31 day cycle)
AF-10 January (29)
AF-14 February (35)
3 March ovulated (using OPK?day 19 of cycle)
AF- 13 March (28)
1 April ovulated. Day 20

Hope that all makes sense!! Basically last month and this month I have used the OPK which has told me I ovulate quite late but what I was surprised at was last month that my AF turned up fairly quickly afterwards. This month I have had AF pains since day before ovulation and still uncomfortable (not painful though) so I can imagine my AF coming along around day 28 again. I have read that you need at least 10 days between ovulation and AF but it doesn?t seem like I am getting that. Seems like my body is kicking into AF mode before I have even ovulated and it is annoying me!!! I figure I will go to the doctor if AF turns up ?early? but I just imagine I will get the old speech about not having been trying very long/only just come off the pill and that they will tell me to go away!

So really just wanted to know if anyone else had late ovulation and whether it stopped them getting pregnant?

Futurity - Before becoming pregnant with dd I had such an erratic cycle (35-56 days) went to see a gynocologist who said I would need help in order to get pregnant (I wasn't trying but as I kept missing periods I thought it best to check it out). Then, voila, I'm pregnant. Actually have no clue as to when I ovulated in my cycle but apparently its between days 12-14 BEFORE the beginning of your next period which is great in a standard cycle.

Unfortunately it seems as if I don't ovulate 12-14 days before AF...it seems to be about 10 days

Futurity, that sounds like a short luteal phase. I don't know anything about it personally, but know it's been mentioned a few times on the site. A google search gives quite a few links that may be helpful. I hope you get some answers.

Yes, that's called a luteal phase defect, and there is lots of info if you do a google search. Because there is such a short time between fertilization and the next period - there isn't enough progesterone being produced to support the embryo. I'm quite sure it was a matter of taking extra Vitamin b12 to lengthen the luteal phase. It's common enough and can be fixed. I would certainly take your information to your gp or consultant and they can do certain tests to confirm this. Let us know how you get on furturity

I have read about the luteal phase defect and figured that is what it may be. I had read about Vitamin B6 and was going to get some but then read on the box it said not to be used with other supplements with it in which my Sanatagon Pro Natal does have so wasn't sure what to do next.

I suppose I will wait until AF does turn up early to confirm my suspicions and then see my doctor but I am so scared that they are going to dismiss me (read too many things about dissmissive doctors recently!!) and that I will have to wait many months to be taken seriously?

Futurty, look in to a herb called agnus castus. It regulated cycles and helps lengthen the luteal phase. apparently it is just as effective as clomid without the side effects. Google on it and see what comes up.

also, if low progesterone is your problem (i think a short luteal phase does indicate low levels) magnesium supplements are recommended in my "Stay fertile longer" book should be taken in the form of magnesium glycinate 1000 milligrams a day. Perhaps speak to somebody in the health food shop if you have one near.

Thanks for your help. Really useful to hear from others who have similar issues. Just looked into agnus castus and it seems to be a good starting point...can I get that and the magnesium from health shop? (Holland and Barrett for example?)

Boots!

futurity · 03/04/2004 08:41

Thanks for that...off to Boots and Holland and Barratt to get stuff today. Feel a lot more prepared with information if I need to go and see the doctor...she doesn't like fussing so will be good to go in with facts.

Still got aches which I expect will continue until AF turns up. Trying to keep bad mood under control! Realised that I have never really had PMS before as was on the pill until having DS1 and then fine whilst pregnant/breastfeeding/on Mini Pill then back on "normal" pill so no chance to experience the full horror of time of the month hormone explosion!!

Update: Booked doctors appointment for 2 weeks today to go through it all with her. By then I will probably have had my period (due at the weekend..9 dpo!) so will have 3 months worth of evidence for her to consider. (saying that bet AF is late just to torment me!!)

futurity, or you could always be pregnant this cycle instead!!!!!!!!!

futurity · 05/04/2004 13:20

LOL Bluestar! You never know but highly unlikely I would think considering the constant AF aches I have at the moment....or can you still get those if you ovulate late but still get pregnant?

futurity, from reading these threads, I don't think you can ever rely on any symptom to tell you either way. Some people have been absolutely convinced that af will arrive and it doesn't. I'm 11DPO, af due Thursday, however I started spotting this morning with a slight temp drop. This has not happened to me before. My temp always remains pretty high for me when I start spotting and af arrives, only dropping a couple of days into it. Temp still above coverline though. Not sure what is going on but if it is af, she is bl**dy early and has given me no warning that she is coming. Cow!! I guess it could be implantation bleeding but am not getting my hopes up. Oh well, the trials and tribulations of wanting a baby.

Fingers crossed Bluestar ..I hope you make it until Friday with no AF! And I hope I make it to 11DPO for a change!!

Update: Just been to seen doctor. To cut long story short she basically agrees that it seems to be a short luteal phase problem. Next step is to see how we get on this cycle (currently CD 8 I think) and if no joy then next cycle to have blood tests on day 21 (or my equivilant..7 days after ovulation she said). Also at that time the nurse will do some sort of smear thing (nice!) and my DH will provide sperm sample. Then if they come back with problems more tests on day 5 I think she said to test prolactin? As you can see just trying to write down whilst I remember what she said so if anyone could fill in the details of the tests I would be grateful!!

Feel happier now that I have talked to her and that the process has started. She said that fertility people like you to have been trying a year (especially if you have a child already) but I think because I have been recording my OV etc that it has helped to identify there may be a problem already. She said treatment may involve drugs in the second part of the cycle like progestrone pessaries to encourage the lining not to shead early.
