Hello - wonder if you can help for a friend of mine. She has been doing ovualtion tests and for the last 2 months (since she has been doing them)they have been coing up +ve (with a smiley face as using digital) only 7 days before her AF arrives. I had always thought pretty much everyone ov-ed 14 days before AF. Do you know whether this means there might be something wrong? any advice very welcome! Thanks!

Coggy will know more, but I think you need a luteal phase of at least 10 days for imlantation to occur (have just started reading my Toni Welcher book)

yeah that's what i thought, but would be best for coggy to confirm this.

She is out tonight i think so prob won't reply till tomorrow so best to keep this bumped up for her.

I'm not coggy, but I have a few thoughts on Luteal Phases (the time between OV and AF).

14 days is the "average", which means pretty much no woman actually gets there. If you have a luteal phase of less than 10 days it can be a barrier to conception (because even if you do fertilise an egg it doesn't have a chance to "bed in" before AF flushes it away.

Getting a +ve on an OV kit does NOT mean you are ovulating. Again, for most women it does, but an LH surge (which is what the kit measures) does not always result in OV.

When I started TTC one year ago, my initial temperature charts indicated that I had a luteal phase of just 7 days. I was also using OV kits, which were giving me +ves. After three months of that I went off to see my GP, expecting him to laugh at me and tell me to come back after a year. He didn't - he took me seriously and sent me for blood tests. These indicated low progesterone levels, and I got my referral to the fertility clinic.

My first appointment at the fertility clinic indicated that I was, despite all the signs, not ovulating. So I've been on the fertility drug, clomid, since then.

It's difficult to extend your luteal phase if it is short. I appeared to extend mine from 7 to 10 days by taking a vitamin B6 supplement (50 - 100 mg per day), but as it was later proved I was not ov-ing, this could mean nothing. Clomid is supposed to also help with your LP, by making you ov earlier in your cycle (and on clomid my ov day has moved from CD16/17 to CD14).

I recommend your friend discusses this with her GP.

Hope this helps!

Hugs,
Artoo.

Artoo thanks very much for taking the time to explain that. I think it probably doesnt look like very good news - or at least serious enough for her to talk to her GP about it.

Good luck to you!

Thanks again.

I am no expert, but my persona machine told me yesterday that I was ovulating on day 21 and 22, which si about 8-10 days before I would expect AF. I seem to remember from before that this happened msot months (only strated using again this month) and i conceived first time of trying on an ov day \9sorry to those who are struggling, I know taht prob makes you want to kill me)

All these people recommending me as an advisor!!!

Actually...I came on MN to find out about this subject many months ago and was told to ask Artoo....so you've got the best person already answering your thread IMO.

I guess if you're ovulating then you're fertile.

It can depend on so many other factors....I ov regularily.....I am supposidly fertile but finding ttc difficult beacsue I ov late in my cycle.

Everyone's different...so I'm not much help I'm afraid.
Would it be a big problem if you did fall pg?

Try not to worry about it.....if you do you may delay your AF and that'll make you panic more!!

Hope you get what you want.
