Could I be pregnant or is this wishful thinking?

Before I start, I know that I should relax, be patient and wait but it's not in my nature!

I had a miscarriage (medical management) on the 29th October (so nearly 6 weeks ago). I was only measuring 6w1d when the growth stopped and it was shown on a scan the following week as I'd had weekly scans. After the full 5 doses of pessaries I hadn't passed the products and they were removed manually by the Doctor (who was satisfied that she had removed what was needed) I'm 35 and it was my first pregnancy. My boobs soon went back to normal size and stopped being tender and I lost my aversion to tea and strong smells.

I haven't had a period as yet which I realise is normal. I had an abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound scan on Monday (Friday today) as part of an annual screening following an ovary removal 8 years ago, so nothing to do with the miscarriage. The sonographers took a very long time and asked me a lot of questions so I knew something was amiss. I have since seen my scan report which reported a small hyperechoic area in my uterus which could be retained products but had some colour doppler uptake although I've not seen the Consultant yet. I will be seeing them in 10 days.

I can explain more about the scan report if anyone knows about those things - there was stuff about a corpus luteum cyst too.

If you are still with me I am very grateful!

I did a home pregnancy test on Monday night which was negative (but did show up positive after the 10 minutes so can't be trusted).

I repeated a test tonight, so 4 nights later which showed a faint positive within 3 minutes. I did a test with tap water too to check for evaporation lines!! I know that morning urine samples are better but I am not very patient and we've got friends over later and I wasn't sure if I could have wine!

I know that retained products may cause a positive test and I will repeat the test again in a few days. In view of the Doctor being sure that she had everything, a positive test following a negative and the loss of my previous pregnancy symptoms would you be quietly hopeful if you were me?

We haven't been at it like rabbits but we haven't used contraception those times either.

You sound very pregnant to me! I can see why you're anxious/uncertain with that history but if the test was negative a few days ago (at least within the proper timeframe) and positive now I think it's unlikely to be a retained products issue. The only thing I would say is that it's probably pretty early so of course it's possible that the tests go negative again and that you get your period after all. The sensitive tests/scans etc do mean you are a bit more likely to pick up a conception that doesn't work out. But I'm sure you're fully aware of that. Good luck and tentative congratulations!

good luck....having a corpeus luteum cyst is very good news!

angelgabe · 06/12/2013 20:24

Although it's not actually a cyst....some sonographers call it that but in fact it's just a corpeus luteum which is a very good thing!

Thank you all for replying. I shall stay quietly hopeful and pray it all works out.

For interest, did you get a completely negative test before you started testing (apart from the monday night one that went PG after 10)?

I am newly pregnant following a miscarriage, I didn't have a period in between. It was 4 weeks since my MC on Tuesday last week, tested and got a negative, on Saturday I tested and got a very very faint positive, not really anything there but by tuesday this week it was a very clear result...sounds a bit like your test on Monday and then Friday to me- so yes, in your position I would be hopeful. It is a bit of a rollercoaster, isn't it? Thanks

Hi Armadale, I didn't test before Monday because we'd been told to wait one cycle (for dating is the only reason I can find) and I thought it wouldn't happen anyway. I'm quietly hoping that the positives will get darker and that I don't have any bleeding. The EPU sister said I could have early scans next time but she's going to tell me off I think! Quiet congratulations to you, I hope it all goes well for you this time x

Hi Cybercat, the reason that I asked if you had done a definite negative pregnancy test before was because the EPU should have advised you to do one two weeks after the medical management to check it was negative- this is absolutely standard practice and they are really at fault for not telling you this- at St Thomas' where I am they actually give you the pregnancy test when you leave and ask you to ring them with the result in 14 days time to make sure that you do it and if you don't they ring and chase it......If they had advised you of this and you had done the test and got a clear negative, then you would be in a much clearer situation now as you would be completely sure this was a new pregnancy the tests were picking up.....so don't let anyone at EPU give you a hard time for not waiting a cycle, it does make dating a bit harder, but really you were given inadequate advice here and it is not something you should allow them to give you a hard time for.

(In terms of dating, you can get a very very faint positive from day 24 in my experience, and a proper positive from day 26, so you can use the date of your test to help you pinpoint. )

Fingers crossed for you

Thank you so much for that. I wasn't told that (but I also wasn't told to avoid tampons either!). It was the ward Doctor that discharged me, she was really lively but the EPU sister when I initially booked the medical management was much better for practical advice and I didn't see her when I was an in-patient.

Gosh I had the tampons one as well....I'm thinking there ought to be a post discharge booklet they can give people with advice about things like that- if you are having your first MC of course you wouldn't know! I was at a different hospital then who were just rubbish- to be honest most of my useful advice has come from MNet Smile

Just thought I'd come back to my thread. Dug through the bathroom bin to find the test I did using water and many hours later it showd a faint pink line like my positive test - can only be an evaporation line! This mornings test came up faintly positive in 3 minutes so I'm going to stay quietly hopeful. Ideally I think I should retest every other day to see if the line darkens but I'm already thinking I will test again tomorrow!

Ignore that post! I just remembered that I emptied the bathroom bin last night so the water test went! I tested last night & this morning, put both on bedside table then later binned last nights test (which I then mistakenly fished out of the bin).

Feeling stupid and must stop overthinking!

Oh bless, I have a line of ten tests on my bedside table at the moment, I totally understand the obsession....if you write the date on the test in pencil afterwards you don't get them mixed up learnt through bitter experience I now bulk buy them in the pound shop- they are 2 for a £1, so I don't feel so profligate testing every day.

They are 79p for a pack of 3 in home bargains but there is no room to write the date. I've now sellotaped them to a piece of paper and written the date. Test was no darker today :-(

I am so Envy -no home bargains near me, I hear such barganious things about them on MNet. I might have to go to one on a day trip

Fingers still crossed for you- the fact that it is still coming up positive must be a good sign

Keeping my fingers crossed for you Cyber - it sounds promising. I mc'ed the day after you - I should have been around 7 weeks, when they scanned me my uterus was already empty. Heartbreaking, awful time as it had taken me over a year to conceive. We decided to carry on trying as my cycle is do irregular I didn't even know how long it would take me to ovulate again. I am on my 2 week wait at the mo - didn't ovulate until day 29 of my cycle so still a few days before I can test. So frightened about getting a bfn ... It's all so hard! Xx

Morning. I think it was wishful thinking for me. Ive tested for the last 4 mornings and if anything the line is getting fainter (really having to squint to see it now) and taking longer to appear. I had a bit of brown discharge like old period yesterday too - apologies for tmi.

Im disappointed but ok with it. If it hadnt have been for thr scan I wouldnt have tested at alland wouldnt have known. At least now I can start again afresh as I should have a bleed soon. Thank you all for posting
