Sorry if Im not posting with proper mumsnet netiquette-new to this, but looking for opinion and advice please ..........

I have just turned 40 and am broody as hell! My ds 1 and 2 are 18 & 13 and my dh and I have been together for 20 years. I have always wanted a 3rd but have tried to deny myself and put it out of my mind as my dh wasn't keen. As we started young (ds1 was a surprise at 21) he wants to be able to enjoy our freedom that we didn't enjoy as youngsters.
However........ i have this overwhelming urge to have one last baby- my dh has said that if I really want one he said we can but I am cautious. Im not sure if I am hesitating out of consideration for his feelings or whether I am just flirting with the fantasy or having number 3 and just like the idea of the pregnancy, new baby and all the fuss and not the reality of raising another child and all the sacrifices....
I'm afraid of having regrets in the future if we dont but, am also worried that I may be pushing my luck-I consider myself very blessed with regards to my marriage and children and maybe I should be satisfied with my lot. Would welcome your thoughts.......

I don't think you are pushing your luck. It's always a big decision to have another child , whatever age you are. But you are obviously thinking it through properly and it doesn't sound like you have any major factors to stop you (no illness mentioned & you are in a long term relationship etc). Maybe write out what age you'll be when no3 would hit milestones such as secondary school, learning to drive etc and see how you feel about that. If you are still keen then go for it!

I think you would be a bit mad TBH

You and your DH had your children nice and young and you are about to reap the benefits of that - by your mid-forties you will have a whole new lease of life and freedom as your boys will be mostly grown up. If you have a baby now, you'll be right back to sleepless nights and nappies when you could be enjoying cocktails on boats and pursuing your non-child passions.

I'd be more afraid of regretting having the child than regretting not having another.

But if you decide to go for it, best of luck :)

One person's "freedom" is another person's lonely "empty nest"!!

I don't think 40 is too old to be a mother. My mum was 34 when she had me, and imho I benefited from a stable home environment and relationship that my elder siblings missed out on.
