I ran an FOE group for 5years and getting the climate change act was a big step forward.

I'm not aware of much ideological backlash in the uk, more just people (MPs) saying "look, I have to prioritise jobs".

PhoenixJasmine - in my experience on mumsnet (around 4 years), I've found feminism to be routinely discussed in many different conversations, not just on the Feminism board which has 5 sub-pages, of one; 'Feminism Chat' having 189 threads in it.

Yet climate change, the thing that will probably fuck about with our lives and most definitely fuck our childrens lives - tumbleweeds. Feminism in a post-stable-climate world, that's an interesting and depressing thing to think about. I have a feeling that hard won rights and general civil liberties will go once the instability of mass migration and resource depletion kicks in, it will be back to survival of the fittest, and by fittest I mean strongest and most violent.

amicissimma - I totally don't mind a differing view, in fact I would love to be convinced that human driven climate change isn't happening but no-one has ever shown me anything that doesn't stink of Koch funding and their ilk. And it's never a conversation, it's just being droned at for pages and pages and pages and pages of cherry picked weirdness interspersed with arrogant calls to 'wake up sheeple!!'. Look at any Cif thread in The Guardian about pretty much any environmental issue. If the thread is open, it's swamped by just utter bonkersness. Like, people send death threats to climate scientist!! Death threats. WTAF. Shit, just being an environmental activist in a few countries will get you killed, 2015 saw 189 activist killed, 50 in Brazil alone. Not that I'm saying climate change deniers are killers but I am saying that when large money making extractive industries come up against opposition things can and do get really dirty.

Anyone got a theory about deniers?

Mine is that for some deniers, the threat of climate change is actually pretty plausible to them and deep inside they can see it and they get it but it's SO TERRIFYING and that to both acknowledge the cause and accept what humanity has to do to change the outcome would mean thinking in ways that is in fundamental opposition to their personal ideology and world view. So they grasp at anything that avoids that mind shift. Desperately, loudly and in ever more creative cognitive dissonant circles.

I don't want to contradict you, as I think we are on the same page so to speak. However, I've seen Climate Change discussed a lot on AIBU, as it should be imo. There is even a thread to do with climate change / environmentalism on the one child family board!

Climate Change is discussed, more and more, IRL too I've noticed. I just spent a weekend away with friends and much of the conversation revolved around environmentalism and sustainability. This is a group of people who I have almost never heard mention climate change before.

Definitely think parents could be a force to be reckoned with on climate change. Kids born today will be in their 30s in 2040 when the worst impacts of climate change are expected. Have set up a parents group - called Our Kids Climate - with some other Mums. It's very new, but it aims to bring Mums, Dads and Grandparents together to take action on climate change. We're sharing information and petitions. There's some really strong parents groups internationally - Parents Roar in Sweden and Moms Clean Air Force in the States. I personally don't 'believe' in climate change, I don't think we have data going back far enough to make concrete judgements and over time things have changed dramatically for many reasons, ice ages for example. However I am committed to helping the environment and reducing waste on a personal level as I think our current lifestyles in the west are pretty disgustingly wasteful and that needs to change regardless of whether it is affecting the climate or not. I buy mostly secondhand with everything from clothes to furniture and try to buy products with recyclable and reusable packaging, DP and I share bath water when possible. Any more ideas or tips would be most appreciated!

silkpyjamas it sounds like you're already doing plenty, the thing is there's only so much anyone can do individually so I would add lobbying to your list, if shops ask for feedback for example tell them you want less packaging and for that that there is to be easily recyclable. I so agree with you about the waste though, it's just sickening how much we throw away.

it's US based but lists the health problems people are having right now due to climate change, which unfortunately is very much real, I have to be honest I didn't know about grains becoming less nutritious to eat, worrying for us all.

silkpyjamas I agree with the previous poster - its great you are taking so much personal responsibility but there is only so much we can do ourselves. governments need to act as the big problems lie with our transport systems, our food and farming systems, our energy systems. Get in touch with your MP (or parliamentary candidates) and talk to them about waste. And on climate change I am afraid the scientific consensus - 99 percent of scientists - are in agreement this is real and happening now: a list from the US gives the idea climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/

Really glad this board is here now. (I was one of the ones who spoke up for its introduction, but I've hardly posted on MN for 6 months.)
