Hey folks, just wondering if anyone has had a barium meal test done on a baby of 9months ish. Just got an app through this weekend and it says DS has to fast from midnight and the test isn't until 12.45pm and can take from 2-4hrs, seems an awfully long time for a baby to fast, cant phone the hosp to query this until Tuesday so just wondering.

My dd had to have a barium swallow at 13 weeks old. She had to not feed that morning, but her appointment was at 10 ish, so she didn't have as long to wait. It took about an hour in total for her. I would ring the hospital and ask for a morning appointment, as he is so little. I was very stressed about the whole thing, she was actually fine, most grizzly thing was having to drink from a bottle as she had only been bf, as a result it took her a while to drink enough.!

Hope that helps.

hi there,
my ds had the barium swallow at 8 months old assuming it is the same thing they told us not to feed him for a while before we came, our appointment was at 9am so i gave him his last bottle at around 4am he only takes small amounts so needs feeding little and often. there is no way i would of been able to fast him for over 12 hours?

once there they gave us a liquid in his bottle which he gulped down no problem, they took the pictures or whatever it is they do lol and that was it over in 10 minutes!! happy baby!

i would most definately query it if i was you, it is like u say an awfuly long time going through till lunch time with nothing!

hope this helps, good luck!

Thank you for your replies, will def check it out and hope they can either give me a morning app or will let me feed him early morning.

Can anyone remember how much of the stuff the little ones had to take? And can it be added to their bottle or apple juice or something?

They gave me a bottle mixed up, it was about 8 floz, but she didn't have to drink it all, just enough to show up in her system, she probably had about half to two thirds. Mind you she was younger than your ds.

If you have bottles take a clean one and they will fill it up with the solution for you, it is quite thick, well thicker than milk, and is very chalky looking. Lots of cloths is a good idea, and baby wipes because it takes a bit of wiping off. The flavour, if it had one, didn't seem to bother her at all though.

It really wasn't at all traumatic, so don't worry about it. I would just try to get an earlier appointment so he doesn't have to go so long without food.

Good Luck

Thank you all for your replies, I phoned this morning to check and they said that they just need him hungry enough to take the stuff, so I will prob just give him his breakfast very early (ie in the middle of the night when he is up)!

And hopefully I will be able to get him to take the stuff, he has a very decerning palate and a stubborn streak when he doesn't like something also doesnt do volume! wont take more than 5oz on a good day!!

Could be fun!
