Anyones child had a tooth out with just a local??

I asked on here about DSs tooth, everyone replied that their child had gone to the dental hspital and had a GA.

This is what we were expecting.

However the dentist has booked him in for Monday morning to have it out under a local

He is only 5!

She says the reason for this is because there is a 3 month waiting list for childrens tooth removals at the hspital He is in alot of pain and I don't think he can wait 3 months,

but the ide of him having this done under a local is scary.

Any advice, experience?

Yes! My daughter (7-ish?) had a tooth whipped out under a local in the dentist's surgery. It was a milk tooth which was impeding the growth of a permanent tooth coming up beside it (a dentist friend said afterwards it wasn't necessary, but there you go).

It was quick, and my daughter was heroic in the surgery, but very upset afterwards. This was mainly because she'd only gone in for a check-up, and was expecting a sticker not an extraction. I made a bad decision letting the dentist do it on the spot (and a really bad decision not phoning my friend first).

Although the procedure wasn't painful, apart from the prick of a needle, she hated the numb feeling, and loathed that strange sensation you get when the feeling comes back.

A bit of gentle preparation should help, and you have the advantage that you can tell him that it'll cure his toothache, plus the promise of a reward (not sweets, he'll tell the dentist!).

The actual extraction was really quick and clean - I know milk teeth have roots, but perhaps they're easier to take out than adult ones. I don't remember her being in much pain afterwards - I think a bit of Calpol might have been administered.

I had one out and it was horrific, Im hoping that milk teeth aren't as deeply set and it will just pop out!

My ds had one removed under local when he was about 7. Be warned - it took a dreadful amount of pulling to get it out (I was quite traumatised, never mind him!) I don't think it actually hurt that much but I was shocked at the amount of effort it took to remove it. ds no longer likes visiting the dentist!
I guess it depends which tooth - hopefully your ds's will be easy.

If it is a milk tooth it should be fine. I had several out and the worse bit is the anesthetic.

Had wisdom teeth out in the chair a couple of years ago and that we a slightly different experience - the worst bit being the sound in your head of tooth root being extracted from jaw bone.

Think your DS should be fine. Distraction could help too - babble on it him constantly so he is thinking of other things.

My son had a milk tooth out at about eight with a local. It was a little sore afterwards but he was absolutely fine and it was much less of a palaver than the other methods. He recovered very quickly.

I had about six teeth out when I was 7 or so, all under local (overcrowded, not rotten!)
Coped really well until one session when I looked at the needle and became afraid due to the sheer size of it! So I'd strongly advise you to distract him when it's being prepared. He'll be absolutely fine.

I had one out at about 7/8 with a localand that is what triggered my dentist phobia and now I have a head full of bad tteth and only go when I am in pain to have them removed under sedation.

That's just me - a wimp it would seem as so many of posted here about 5 yr olds having it done no problem.

DS1 had a milk tooth out under LA because the adult tooth hadn't pushed it out. He got a bit nervous in the chair and said to our dentist "Tell me when you're going to do it" and she replied "I've finished!"

So absolutely no trauma there, I can assure you!

Am really worried about this too, ds had leaukaemia from the age of 3-7 so consequently saw lots of needles and had lots of trauma.

He is super sensitive to medical procedures now, to the point of passing out in a sex ed class and a first aid lesson!

Is the only alternative a GA in hospital? He needs 2 milk teeth out as they are stopping adult teeth coming through.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out with local- it did,'t hurt at all, just felt some pressure, but really, no pain at all.

Yup, ds had it done. Not too bad. I had my wisdom tooth taken out with a local.
