102 temp need advice

My 12 month old has had a bit of a snuffly cold for about a week (no drippy nose though but was a bit bunged up) but otherwise seemed fine if a bit cranky.
Started with one bout of croup-like cough (a couple of barks) then just a bit chesty.
On Monday she was very listless and temp went up to 101 but after 1x5ml spoon of Calpol was fine and back to normal self.
Tuesday seemed fine and sent her to CM. At 11pm she woke very upset - temp went back up to 101 so gave her another dose. Eventually got her back to sleep and she woke again at 4ish very hot - temp up to 101 so gave her another dose and she went down again.
This morning she seemed fine but slightly warmer than normal but chipper, then she started to get hot again. Put her down for nap and she slept well for over an hour - longer than normal.
She now has temp of 102 so have given her another dose of Calpol and waiting for doc to call (was actually supposed to go and see him about another matter but thought it was wise not to drag her out).

Is there anything else I should be doing and when do I get further help?

Sorry, yes I am first time mum so haven't got my wings yet and am probably panicking ridiculously

You def. need to see a doctor.

Cool baths are good to bring temperatures down, so that's one option.

Try not to panic, it's most likely something and nothing.

My DS (17 months) had very similar symptoms and it turned out he had tonsilitis. 5 days of ABs and he's as right as rain!

Definitely see the doctor, but it's likely that s/he will say that your DD has a high temp as her way of fighting the infection. It's good that Calpol is bringing the temperature down. I thought a luke warm bath was better than a cold bath actually, but happy to be corrected if this is not the case. Or a luke warm sponge down might be a good idea. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids as well.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. It's horrible when they're ill isn't it? My 2 year old DD has just come through a bad cold/cough (we've all had it), with sky high temperatures, hacking cough, etc. All I wanted to do was make it better for her. She's a toughie though and while DH and I are still suffering, she's going stir crazy as she wants to be out & about playing!

Hope your DD recovers soon.

Yes, I think that's worth clarifying...

Luke warm (not cold) baths. I had meant luke warm when I wrote 'cool' but I think it's worth making that clear.

too cold water will restrict blood flow to the skin and would probably make the fever worse.

Thanks everyone. The temps coming down again and hovering around 99/100 - still waiting for the doc to call so am hoping that will happen any mo. It took me a while to persuade the receptionist to get him to ring - she wanted me to phone the swine flu line ...

Gah!!! This makes me sooo angry!!

my DS ended up with really bad tonsilitis, because my stupid GP refused to examine him properly (the Paed I took him to, took one look at his throat and said it was very, very bad and would have been totally obvious)

But, GP surgeries are so damn desperate not to diagnose SF,t hey don't want to touch kids with fevers. SOOO bloody annoying!

Glad the temp is coming down a bit.

Is your LO still taking fluids? that is important.

I'm giving her lot of my milk - as often as she wants (although it's only about a minute here and there) and spooning water at meal times plus milk with cereal. I still can't persuade her to drink from any sort of cup and I've been trying for six months!

hey, don't sweat it!!

My 18 month old will only drink from a bottle / toddler cup!! give him a normal cup and he just pours water all over himself. He does this on purpose and seems to enjoy doing that!!!

Oh... I just figured out you mean even a bottle!! (sorry! )

Makedo, your milk alone is just perfect My DD was exactly the same about drinking out of anything for ages, and certainly never used a cup or bottle before she was a year old.

Any news from the doctor yet? ( about swine flu.)

No news - it's now been three hours - chased at two hours and was told he'd only just finished surgery - an hour on and still no word. Will give it another 20 mins. She's sleeping now anyway.

Can't believe the swine flu thing either - the receptionist said that they automatically referred any baby over 1 year with fever to the swine flu line regardless of other symptoms!

Oh, I can believe it!!

They can't wait to offload any child with a fever.

I ended up taking my two back to the Portland (appreciate I'm lucky / fortunate to have that as an option) and they were diagnosed and treated instantly.

Finally spoke to the doc - watch her overnight blah blah - so will take her in tomorrow.

However, he managed to put the wind up me by saying that I should be giving her under 5ml of calpol as she's only 18lb10 (8.47kg). Now worried I've been overdosing her. Gah!

HOw is she today?

hi - sorry been trying to juggle looking after her and working (without much success).

She's much better - thanks for asking - actually laughing spontaneously when dh got her up - like a changed girl . Sounds silly but I'd really missed her laughter

Temp nice and low, although sometimes she feels a bit warm but I think the house is quite hot as it's freezing outside. She sneezing a bit and has a little cough so I'm hoping its just turned into a normal cold (she always has a cold)

If she has another good night I'll send her to CM tomorrow.

So happy she's better

hi there, glad your little one is laughing again - it's the sweetest sound after they've been ill! you probably know it already so please feel free to ignore(!), but you can alternate giving paracetamol and ibroprofen say every 3 hours...the latter brings down the temp much more quickly IME. there's another thread on that somewhere here...HTH and your DD recovers quickly

Yes, pleased she is better.

After DS was ill, I nearly cried with happiness when he threw himself on the floor in a strop.

Knowing he was well enough to throw a little tantrum was wonderful!!
