Stinky baby

My four month old babies farts STINK they’ve made me nearly gag surely this isn’t normal for such a small baby ? babies always been breastfed but started going ten days between poos at around 11 weeks. Docters prescribed laxatives which I give to him if it gets to 8-9 days since a poo , but they’ve stopped working now and I don’t really want to rely on them they can’t be healthy ? I know ten days can be normal too but hv and Docters are all giving conflicting advice some saying he’s constipated others saying it’s fine so I’m confused. The smell of the wind doesn’t seem normal to me though ! Anyone have any knowledge for my stinky baby lol !

I’d go back to the gp with the constipation, ironically ds was badly constipated as part of his cmpa symptoms (always explosive when he went) but that’s apparently unusual as it’s normally mucous diarrhoea.

He also has horrific room clearing wind which has never been a concern, even when he made the paediatrician gag. He’s just a small stink bomb.. and weaning certainly hasn’t helped, oh the curried farts

Well what's his poo like when he actually goes? If it's the usual mustard sludge then he's not constipated.

@Lunafortheloveogod He did have bloody mucus diarhea for about a week not that long ago but a&e said seems like tummy bug , can breastfed baby’s have cmpa? An is it still constipation if it’s not hard poo ? It’s explosive sludge 🤢 lol at the wind! Is it linked to his cmpa?

Is it the sludge yes but I’d say brown not yellow and looks like ice cream coming out of a mr whippy machine when it’s coming out😂

He had the odd bit of mucousy poo if we got him going regularly, but it wasn’t bloody just like a sneeze mixed with the browny green foamy crap. They were never clear on what’s constipated just he should’ve been going more, formula fed babies poo more though bf’d can poo weekly and be normal apparently. As for bf’ing anything he’s allergic to that you eat comes through your milk to an extent, and it takes a while to leave your system I think cows milk can be between 2-6weeks. We combi fed in the early days but formula fed due to allergies (he’s dairy, berries, some fruits and citrus, they also suspected tomatoes which he’s not now) so I was left with a limited diet on what I could eat and actually enjoy as I wouldn’t have had symptoms I wouldn’t have known til I fed him and he reacted if something was in a sauce or cross contaminated for example.

He’s been dairy free for months and it hasn’t left or toned down .. might be a link somewhere but I’ll also say his cmpa formula smells horrible too.. like cheap salt n vinegar crisps lol

Dil water helps. Make your own with a kilo of dil boiled and then seeped all day into roughly the same of water - you can then give him half a teaspoon two or three times a day until his poos become regular.

Bloody diarrhoea for a week doesn’t sound good. Did you ever see your GP about that?

Not all doctors know what they're talking about WRT breastfeeding as some are only used to formula- ten days can be normal, you're right.

I wouldn't personally be giving laxatives at 8-9 days unless there's another reason that he's thought to be constipated, as 8-9 days can be normal and breastmilk is a laxative on its own. Maybe see a different doctor and ask if they think you should cut dairy from your own diet- breastfed babies can have cmpa as it comes through the milk. With your doctor's permission, if you cut it out of your diet for a couple of weeks it should get better if that's the problem.

That does sound like a long time between poos. It could well be CMPA; some of the protein comes through in your breast milk, so babies who are more sensitive can react to it. One of mine was constipated from it (the other had the more classic mucus diarrhoea).

If you're not formula feeding at all, you can easily try coming off dairy (and soya - big crossover) yourself for a month or so and see if there's any improvement.

My breastfed baby would go up to ten days without pooing and yes terrible farts and pop was like thick sludge. But was just normal for him. Second baby was very similar. My friends breastfed baby used to pop several times a day. So they are all different. As long as not in pain I'd just carry on

@Lunafortheloveogod sorry for replying late ...that’s really interesting thank you how did they test your baby for cmpa? So it was just the constipation that was a symptom for baby ? I might take him back to the Docters to double check , they suggested orange juice last time 🙄 luckily I questioned it. so I might swap Docters too.

I took him to a&e and they checked him over said they think it’s a tummy bug it did stop after a week and went back to consultation so maybe they were right ? I was very worried x

Brilliant thanks I was concerned about the laxatives , that’s sounds like a good idea you know I think il try that ! Off to swap Docters today - mine are rubbish

Oh really well I’m going to look into cmpa more I think. Coming off the dairy sounds like a good way to test it out.

Thank you Ihave just never personally known a breastfed baby to go that long between Poos an have such stinky wind so maybe it could be something more x

@sh13 the hv and gp just offered us a milk trial (I combi fed in the beginning but for the milk trial I went completely onto formula). Constipation and reflux were the only consistent things, along side the wind, he eventually developed eczema and had colic symptoms when I tried to wean him off colief (used it as it helped his constipation more than anything). First milk trial was inconclusive (before the eczema) as he wouldn’t drink the sma Althera or alfamino but second time round we were given nutramigen, which hes stayed on n his eczema cleared up besides a 10p sized patch on his side (previously his entire torso) but he was 4months before the eczema flared up. Almost as he started on 8oz bottles.

DD2 went up to 10 days between (huge runny) poos from around 7-10 weeks. Dr said not constipated as poo was runny and EBF. However DD was definitely uncomfortable and windy after about 4 days. Tummy massage, legs up to the chest and application of sudocrem on the exit area sometimes helped bring a poo out quicker.

I believe there are quite a few babies that have this problem at around this stage as have read a few threads about this on MN. They seem to grow out of it by 12 weeks.

Whilst I would definitely go back to the doctor just to double check, and maybe start cutting out certain foods from your diet 1 at a time to test for intolerance (your HV should be able to advise on this) I also have a 4 month old who has absolutely vile farts. They are worse than her dad's and she especially likes to do them when I'm feeding her and can't put her down .

She is fine, she can go a long time between poos (it's quite rare for breastfed babies to get constipated, and very normal to go a long time between poos) and her actual poos don't smell as bad as the farts. So do try not to worry too much if there are no other on going symptoms.
