Diarrhoea in 5 year old - no other symptoms

5 year old DS has had diarrhoea for almost a week now. No other symptoms, eating fine, energy fine, no real cramps except for a bit of an ache right before he needs to go.

First few days he was going about 8 times during the day and 1-2 times during the night. The last few days it's been about 3 times during the day, none at night. So I've thought it's been on the way out but is still there! I've tried plain food, cutting out dairy - nothing seems to be making a difference.

NHS says 5-7 days is the norm for childhood diarrhoea so I'll phone GP on Monday if no better as it'll have passed a week by then. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of what it might be - seems like a very odd tummy bug!

We are going through the same. Me, DH and DS have all had it, just over a week now and we are still loose but going much less. My DS is going twice a day now, but this is still a lot for him, he is usually once every few days. We went to the docs on Monday, did samples and have DS' results back, 'normal, no action required' which I was a bit Hmm about because it's definitely not normal! Mine and DH's results should be back on Monday. No advice, just today we are going through the same. It's shit, literally!

Ah sorry to hear you're going through the same @alwaysscared! Bit reassuring too though (sorry). It's so weird - he's never had anything like it, and it just seems to be going on for soooo long. He said yesterday he was "very fed up with poos". Bless!

Buy some probiotics - if they have the runs for long enough it flushes out all the good bacteria which in turn prolongs the misery...
Poor kids.

I'll get some of those too!
It's just such a pain, and like you say, it's so unlike him!

Yeah I know, it's awful as otherwise he's fine and so wants to go out etc., but I'm petrified of straying too far from a toilet!

Ah, glad to hear it.

Same here, still on the loose side and still more frequent than he'd usually go, but I do think it's improving. Going to phone Doctor's in morning though, as it's been 8 days....

Yeah, be worth putting a sample in just to check it's nothing that needs treating! Good luck.

Did you get to the docs? Xx

No, cos today he's been 90% normal so don't see the point, it's obviously leaving his system! Hope your family are all improving too x
