Huge bleeding molluscum

My 10 year old dd has had a few molluscum now for over a year, she had 3 on the back of her knee which grew to probably about 8mm each and ended up bursting. There was a lot of puss but they settled down after a couple of days and then disappeared leaving some horrible pits.

She now has a cluster on her thigh and one of them is huge, it’s over 10mm and looked to have burst last Monday, there was a bit of puss and it unfortunately got infected as she ended up with a large red patch of skin around it so the walk in centre prescribed anti biotics. I thought it would have gone down by now but if anything it’s getting bigger, I have tried to gently squeeze it as suggested at the walk in centre but can only get a tiny amount of puss out of it, it seems very firm, but it is bleeding a lot. I’ve popped sudocrem on it and a fresh plaster every day but she’s managed to catch it today and it bled like mad.

Has anyone else experienced this? My husband says he thinks I should take her to the gp on Monday but I’m concerned they will just think I’m wasting their time as I’ve read that they won’t do anything for molluscum. Has anyone been to the gp with this and been successful at getting any treatment? Has anyone bought a treatment that has worked? I’ve just ordered some Molludab ( obviously won’t use it on the bleeding one but don’t want the rest to get this big ).

I feel so sorry for her, it looks awful and she’s going to end up with another huge scar Sad

We haven't had anything like the bleeding problems you describe but both my dc had molluscum, the elder for nearly two years. In your situation I would try either tea tree oil or antiseptic cream. I really do swear by tea tree oil but the only thing that really cleared up the molluscum was time and removing the hard 'pearls' from the bumps to stop them spreading. The gp could do nothing except, as in your case, there is infection or serious skin inflammation.

I do feel for you and dd. It is miserable! I hope they clear up soon.

If it’s big and keeps getting caught and bleeding loads GP might zap it with a silver nitrate stick. Think rather than covering it all the time I’d take the plaster off at night and let it dry out a bit. Took ages for my daughters to finally go, they do bleed loads when the middle comes out, it’s weird solid warty stuff.

I thought it was a good thing, because then they all die off. Obviously not pleasant for your daughter. They seem unusually large though. I squeezed my son’s and they all vanished within weeks.

I do not believe in homeopathy etc normally but was willing to try anything when my daughter had this. She is a gymnast so was horrible for her having the unsightly spots when she is in a leotard 4 times a week. She had them for months. I tried silver cream stuff from amazon. No joy. Molludab was painful and made her really upset. So we stopped that.

So I got thuja capsule things from Boots.
The spots were gone within weeks. And haven’t returned.

Thank you for all your replies. I’d never heard of molluscum until she got it but it must be more common than I thought.

Candyflip - yes the size of them is concerning me. I’ve read that they’re normally between 2-5mm but this one is over 10mm Confused I’ve read that they can get larger if the child has a poor immune system, but she’s very rarely ill so it’s a bit confusing.

I think i’ll get her to keep the plaster off it tomorrow and if it’s still really inflamed and bleeding on Monday when she has finished her anti biotics I’ll take her to the gp to see if they can do anything. I don’t think the infection around it has completely gone yet because there’s a lot of redness.

If it's infected and getting bigger keep going back to GP or nurse until they get it under control, ds had a couple of molluscum that got infected and left huge holes in his arms (I have a picture of how it looked when the infection eventually cleared if you are not squeamish).

Our nurse was brilliant (much better than the GP) and insisted he came back every 2-3 days to make sure it was clearing. He was given iodine patches and proper dressings to take home and two adult strength antibiotics on prescription to take each day..

Isadora - how many thuja tablets did you give her? I tried some about a month or so ago but was confused about the dosage and couldn’t get a straight answer online so stopped them after a couple of weeks. The appearance of them did change whilst using the thuja but they got bigger rather than disappearing. Maybe I should try her with it again.

WeAllHaveWings - your poor ds, it’s awful for them isn’t it. I’m so glad your nurse did something for him. I’m a bit nervous about going to the gp, they make me anxious and I only normally go if I really have to, so I’m worrying they’re going to think we’re wasting their time but I think I’m going to have to take her. It’s not a normal sized molluscum so hopefully they will be willing to do/suggest something.
