Silent reflux in newborns

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone had any experience of silent reflux and how to basically stay sane through this time?

I've just had my daughter (5 days today) and since birth she has struggled to sleep at all during the night. The only way we have managed to get her to sleep is by holding her on our chest. This is doable at the moment as hubby is on leave but he will soon be returning to work and I doubt 3 hrs of sleep every night is going to work. I also worry that I won't be able to cope as well as I'll be doing more on my own during the day.

So how did people cope?

Tried a lot of the things like, short feeds with frequent burping, gentle massage of the tummy, bicycle exercises etc. but come evening it's like gas demons take over!

I watch her in her crib and she is in so much discomfort and I'd do anything to help her.

I just wonder why she's able to sleep in the day but not the night.

So what did people do?

Thanks

This is normal newborn behaviour. It takes about 4 weeks for them to figure out the difference between day and nght and adjust their sleep. maybe longer. Are you sire it is silent reflux? My 5 month old struggles in the evening with wind. Tummy time more frequently has heldped. Maybe lay him on you, in tummy time pose for 15 minutes and see if that helps with wknd etc

If it is silent reflux (ours didn't present that early) we found these things helped;

  • Not lifting legs up to change nappies soon after a feed (so no bicycle exercises) as this pushed the reflux back up. We rolled her onto one side then the other to change.

  • Feeding as upright as possible and not patting her back to burp (again this made reflux come up) but instead rotated her upper body in a circular motion while upright to get the wind out.

  • Cutting out all dairy for me (she was and still is EBF at 5 months) - this made a massive difference

  • not putting her in the car seat after a feed as this made it worse

  • no tight trousers/ legging waist bands etc and trying to make sure nappy was not super tight

  • the tiger in the tree pose (google it) when she was totally screaming was the only way to make her stop.

  • laying her on her side to sleep (we co-sleep and she sleeps on her side facing me so she can't roll onto her front but can roll onto her back if she wants

  • feeding her lying down at night and not moving her to burp.

At 5 months it's pretty much gone although she still has an intolerance to dairy (spotty face, mega runny poos and phlegmy sounds in chest/throat) if I've accidently had dairy given in and had a biscuit with milk in

Hi All,

Thanks for the messages and advice.

We have a snuzpod waiting to be used by the side of the bed, just need her to stop having so much tummy pain in the night so she can use it! I can actually hear her stomach reacting at night.

I'd totally forgot the Tiger in Tree pose from my baby classes.

It's just so hard, you see your little one in so much pain and just can't help.

My baby has that. He was 7wks early. And ok in hospital wasn't until a few weeks later. Nothing helped tried everything! apart from baby gaviscon and Zantac he's just turned 1 and is still on it. go to the doctors. Don't take no for an answer. I took him to the doctors twice and both times (got the same doctor) was told all her boys were like that it was just boys for ya! Angry wasn't until he had an appointment with his consultant that he sees only because he was early no other health problems. She put him on it straight away and didn't understand why the doctor hadn't. After a day or so he was a lot better! You can buy baby gaviscon sachets from the chemist. Just follow the instructions.

I have settled my baby's silent reflux and constipation with the help of Babies magic tea. It's preservative-free and effective.
