10 month old with hip dysplasia

At my sons 10 month check the HV noticed my son has uneven leg creases at the back of his legs. We saw the GP and they felt the same so he's being referred to the hospital for checks for hip dysplasia.

He has been walking a few weeks and I've noticed that he does walk differently, one leg seems "stuck" and doesn't move in the same way as the other one and is slightly turned out. But what is worrying me more now is that walking seems to be painful for him. He often cries when he walks, or whinges. Sometimes it's ok, but at others he seems in pain.

I have no idea how long we'll have to wait to be seen at the hospital.

Has anyone got any advice or experience of hip dysplasia?

Hi,
My DN had hip dysplasia when he was about 9 months. He was in plaster from his ankles to his belly button. He was like this for a few months. Although it was hard at the time because his plaster was heavy he was fine but needed lots of entertaining as he couldn't move. If your DS needs to be in plaster just remember you will get through it.

My DD had hip dysplasia, luckily diagnosed right after birth. She had to wear various harnesses for many months but never had to have plaster or surgery.

It really depends on what they find on the x-rays. Our daughter had "shallow sockets" and needed just non-invasive treatment, but a child with no sockets or the femur not in joint would need more. If your son is walking, I would assume that his problem can't be that severe, but I only know about my own child's treatment.

I don't know where you are but we saw Miss Tennant at St. Mary's in Paddington. She was absolutely excellent.

My DD was 6 weeks when she was diagnosed, then had several harnesses. She's totally fine now, infact she's been figure skating all week!

Your DS will probably have to have some kind of harness or plaster depending on the results of his scan, I'm sure he will be fine. Good luck OP Flowers

hi all, I started a new thread on this below but don't think I made it clear it was about hip dysplasia in the subject heading. My 5 week old little girl has just had a harness fitted. Could I ask how long it took your little ones to get used to wearing their harness? We are having a terrible time of it at the moment - she seems very unhappy as she can't stretch out or kick properly. Do they get used to it eventually? Also did you notice a change in their poo movements? Sorry TMI but she was quite regular and now is only going every couple of days and i'm sure there must be a build up and it contributing to her being so uncomfortable! Grateful for any replies on this thanks :)

It took her a few weeks to get used to it, can't remember about whether it affected her bowel movements sorry!

She will eventually get used to it, but some larger sized dresses and baby gros, I remember being to excited to put her in trousers! Good luck!
