Smelly ear

My dd (3) has an ear infection, took her to the doctor last monday and was prescribed antibiotics as she had had fever and pain for four days. by wednesday the fever had completely gone and the pain was much diminished. but today she has been pretty irritable and her ear is really smelly. she isn't talking about having a sore ear, which she would if it really were.

I'm assuming i need to take her back to the doctor but obviously it's now friday night, so it will either have to wait til monday or i can take her to out of hours. I'm just wondering if it's okay to wait til monday? she is still taking abs, but clearly they aren't really dealing with the infection. has anybody had any experience of this? i don't know whether the bad smell is a sign of something urgently dodgy or just unpleasant.

My son has had so many ear infections with a smelly ear like this. It may be that the antibiotics aren't the right ones for the infection - our GP usually takes a swab to confirm that we have been given the right ones - they may need to do this.

The smelliest bit usually comes after the ear drum has perforated and I presume that it's the infection behind it that's coming away. We have also been given some ear drops as well as the antibiotics - they may offer you these too - it usually clears it up for us.

I would perhaps take her back - if it's no better in the morning.
