Is this just a common cold?

DD 22 months came down with a few cold like symptoms a couple of days ago, blocked runny nose etc.

She seems to have got worse yesterday and this morning, her nose is now fully blocked and she is not eating. She is drinking fluids ok, with difficulty. She is sneezing constantly, with thick green mucous. Shes also pulling at her ears, crying and pointing at them. Also starting to cough now.

She seems very down with herself too and seems to be in pain. I have given her calpol, have rubbed vicks on to her chest and also have a calpol plug in her bedroom. We have tried the steamy bathroom trick but its not working and shes still really blocked up.

Is there anything else I can try to make her feel a bit better? We had a horrendous night last night she just seems really uncomfortable Sad I had her propped up in bed with me last night which helped her get a little sleep.

Pulling at ears would make me wonder about an ear infection. So, worth getting a GP to look ASAP in case she needs antibiotics. If you have a nurse-led walk in centre, that would also work.

There is a nasty cold type bug going round which 16month old ds2 has kindly shared with me. The symptoms we had are exactly what you've described apart from the ear pulling (in ds2). I had quite bad sinus pain for about a week which made my ears hurt.

Ds2 was quite subdued for about a week and had a temp but not fever levels and was fine with calpol.

I'd take her to the GP/walk in just to check her ears as having one illness can make you susceptible to another and it doesn't hurt to get her checked.

Def go to GPs.
Just been with my youngest ds and calpol answer for him.
However, he had his ears, chest and throat checked and your little one pulling at ears is a warning sign of infection and pain.
Hope you get seen soon.

Thankyou for the posts. I have had DD seen at the GPs who said there was no sign of infection in the ears thankfully. Her chest sounds a little rattly but has just been prescribed simple linctus and calpol for now with instructions to go back if symptoms dont improve after five days.

Hope both your DS's are recovering well Smile

Hacking cough here. Nuisance, especially at night.
Keeping going with the calpol. I may get a linctus tomorrow if still coughing a lot.
