Any advice poorly 3yr old...

Quick back story - two days 3yr DS suddenly poorly high temp 39.8 at about 4pm got through the night with regular calpol and ibuprofen, next day (Friday) he did not want to get out of bed - high temp still so rang doc who saw him mid morning and said he had tonsillitis started him on 10 day penicillin. We kept up the regular calpol and ibuprofen, last night at 6 his temp was 40, and DS said his eyes were blurry, so phoned GP who was still there and he saw him at the end of surgery - who said you just need to be vigilant 'currently too well' to be worried about meningitis but he did check his neck - he suggested give two antibiotics when we get home and keep up regular calpol/ibuprofen - (that was meant to be quick)

Anyway overnight the temp has been lower but DS has started to say his neck hurts, eyes look red/blurry, he is still in bed, he woke and drunk lots at 6.30 am and temp was 38 -

Husband away, at home with younger toddler, so is there anything else I should be doing does he need a third visit to the doctor? Or do I just carry on what we are doing? How long do I let him stay in bed?

I seem to lose the ability to think straight once they are ill!

Any advice would be great- thank you

It is fine for him to stay in bed & good that he is drinking lots, but if you feel he's deteriorated I would ring out of hours gp for advice, especially if he's mentioned his neck hurting. Can you line up a friend to take your younger toddler if you do need to go in?

I would ring out of hours.

Hope he feels better soon, and try not to worry. x

Thanks for replies - he has woken up and is lying on the sofa - he is still saying neck hurts but he is brighter in himself than yesterday - will give him an hour and see how he is...

My DD said she had a sore neck with chickenpox and the doctor suggested it could be because she had been lying around watching tv rather than running around. It didn't come out as a criticism, just that dd was out of normal routine and sleeping on the sofa/ armchair.

Get him seen, DO NOT MESS WITH A SORE NECK like this. It is probably nothing more than sleeping awkwardly but you can not be certain this isn't meningitis. Remember doctors don't always get it right either, even though you were told it wasn't that the other day. There is a fair chance your doctor has never seen a case of meningitis.

Spoke to 111 and doc is ringing us back - he is ok in himself, he has now had 6 doses of penicillin so hopefully by this afternoon he will have tuned a corner. His temp is 38, so much better than yesterday, but will explain to doc and see if they want to see him.
