Hi everyone my daughter had her op on Friday morning to have her tonsils and adenoids removed, she had a bad time coming round after op, I had to be rushed to recovery room as she was literally throwing herself nearly off the bed, she had a bit of a reaction to anaesthetic (made her sick, bad tummy and very sleepy for 2 days) since coming round her throat is very painfull but she's also really complaining of a sore tummy the nurse didn't seem too bothered and told me to get an appointment with gp I ended up in out of hours yesterday as she was crying everytime she stood up with pain they said she needs to go to the toilet, she didn't go until today it seems to have calmed down a little but still very painfull I rang community nurses who told me to go straight to a&e just got home, she's possibly got a urine infection it was showing signs in the dip test so they have sent it to the lab and I will hear back on about Tuesday to see if she needs anti bi's, today she has literally been bouncing of the walls she is so bored at home I keep trying to get her to have calm quiet time as I don't want her to injure herself, is she expected to get bad again over the course of the next 10 days or so, everything iv read is they are not well for 10-14 days but today she is so hyper even tho she's in bad pain, she's never been one to sit quietly even when she's been very poorly!! I'm wondering if I should drop a dose of both paracetamol and iburofen, as she has been on 4 doses 4x a day, she was on codeine 4x a day up until yesterday I haven't given her any today as I thought I should save it for the days when they are supposed to be in agony plus it's main side affect is constipation! It was the worst 2 days of my life but I'm so glad she will not suffer with tonsilitous again :D

Oh. What a dreadful time you're having.

As you say, codeine is terrible for causing constipation - and it sometimes makes people sick.

Plenty of fluids. If she's well enough in herself to be active then I'd let her - within reason.

Hope she gets well again soon.

I would keep up the paracetamol and ibuprofen come hell or high water, personally - far easier than trying to get on top of pain once its kicked in! But yes, I would drop the codeine. It constipates terribly.

My dd2 (aged 25 months) had the same op, and had a hard time afterwards too...it was horrid, but so worthwhile in the end. Yes, the pain can get bad again about 5-7 days after the op (as the scabs heal and drop off) so do keep up the normal meds, but within reason I wouldn't worry about her moving around.
