10mo ds coughing a lot - why?

From my room I can hear my poor ds coughing in his cot and we're just... Well, worried. He's asleep but does wake himself up with coughing, then cries a really sad cry, like he's so upset. Not a pain cry - almost like he's having a nightmare.

Anyway. Ds has had a cough for over two weeks. Dry sounding, fairly frequent, no other symptoms. He was dribbling a lot so thought maybe he was teething, coughing on excess dribble, but no new teeth have materialised. Took him to the dr, a really thorough examination, nothing wrong with him.

Cough hasn't gone away and stayed the same, but over the last few days has gotten more frequent. It's worse at night, and wouldn't call it constant but very frequent. Sliiighty dry crusty nose, so maybe starting to get a cold, has gone off his food. Cough worse at night, dorsn't matter who he's with or where he is. Flat clean, not damp. Sometimes, but not always, it sounds chesty.

I just don't know what it could be. Could he be developing asthma? A chest infection? A cold? Teething? Going to get him a dr appointment but am still very anxious. Please help!

A cough that worse at night is often but not always indicative of asthma.

The fact he's off his food suggests he's not well though. Any fever?

Thanks. That was my concern. A slight temp this morning but he still is coughing although he seems very chirpy. We're taking him to the dr again this afternoon.

To be honest, he sounds exactly like DS during teething, and they can easily teethe for a couple of weeks without anything appearing. Is he chewing things a lot?

That's what I wondered, crazy - he's got 8 teeth and has sometimes coughed when teething.

However, we've just got back from hospital - his temp skyrocketed and the gp sent him to hospital. Chest infection. Very unhappy bunny, but at least a bunny with meds.

Thank you both for the handholding.

Go back to the GP. Like Bea said it can be asthma (or an asthma-like illness anyway) especially if it's worse at night - in under-3s you tend to get coughing rather than the same kind of wheezing that you get with older children & adults, and it can be triggered by viruses rather than allergens.

Get the GP to prescribe a salbutamol inhaler - if that helps reduce the symptoms then you can bless your good luck at having caught it early enough before it got worse.

xpost - glad to hear he's getting the treatment he needs!

Great stuff, I'm glad you got an answer, anyway! It's so hard to know when to act and when to wait.

How is he doing today?
