DD, age 7, temp 40.2 sudden onset.

DD went to school fine today. Was ill last week and over the weekend, but only had a cough hanging over from that. Since about 3.30pm, she's got really feverish. She'd had iboprofen and paracetamol about an hour ago but temp is still 40.2. She first said she had a headache, then it was a stomach ache, and when I put her to bed about 45 mins ago she fell asleep in about 5 mins with me rubbing her tummy. Her pulse is 105.
Not sure what to do. Not happy about her temp being this high, but I am in bed with flu (since Sun), not eaten, and not safe to drive, and DH been called out on an emergency for work, so I can't get DD to OOH. I intend to keep monitoring her, but how long should I give it at this temp before I need to do something?
Please don't flame me for asking here. She has no meningitis signs or breathing probs.

A virus can also cause very high temperatures. I think it is generally more worryingly if the temperature remains very high with maximum doses of calpol and calprofen spaced out over a 24 hour period and the temperature doesn't come down during the morning to climb again late afternoon (ie remains high all the time).

Of course it is also of concern if there are other serious symptoms, like breathing difficulties, severe headaches/aversion to light, rashes, very swollen glands, hallucinations, very sore throat etc.

So, as you already have given her paracetamol and ibuprofen, I would let her sleep now and just regularly check on her. When awake encourage her to sip some water and when her next doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol are due I would check her temperature again and then decide whether to wake her up to give them or not.

Try and rouse her a bit later and check on her - if she is unusually sleepy (given the factor of the time of night etc too) then you do need to call for advice. Ensure she has minimal covers on and the room is not over hot. Trust your instinct and get advice if needs be.

If you have had flu it's very likely that its what she has too.. My dh has just got over it and had very high fever with his.

Update for those of you kind enough to offer opinions .
DD spent the entire night throwing up.
Once that passed, her temp went straight back to normal and she is now full of beans and back to normal.
Whatever it was it was quick and nasty...
I meanwhile, still have flu, sob.
