DD coughing at night - is her room damp?

Just that really, we are in a rented house. Poor DD has been coughing at night last couple of weeks, shes fine during the day. Suggestions/recommendations?

So did she start coughing as soon as you moved in?

Mattress? Dusty room? Previous occupant a smoker?

No we have been here since July and the cough has only been around for last couple of weeks. There is a damp patch on her ceiling and I'm not sure if it has got bigger or not since we moved in. She has changed her pillow, but it's a synthetic fibre one rather than feather.

It's tricky. The damp patch might be a clue. But also there are lots of coughs nd bugs around. Asthma sometimes features a night cough.

Perhaps go and talk to the GP.

Try cleaning everything in the room, just a bit of dust can be an irritant.

If you think you have a damp problem get your landlord onto the case.

If your worried get her checked by the GP.

Has she had a cold? How is she lying down elsewhere?

When we redid sons bedroom with laminate flooring, blind, new bed etc., night coughing ceased.

Thanks - will give room a good clean tomorrow and machine wash her pillow. Going to request agency investigate damp patch on Monday. She's generally one of these kids who never gets sick and during the day she's fine.

put a cold bottle of water, fresh from the fridge, in her room, and one in another room.

Do they both get equally quickly misted and covered in water droplets? If hers gets more, it is either damper or warmer.

Do you open the windows every morning to air it?

We find fanned ionising air purifiers branded Lloyds or Flixonase very good for removing traces of dust or pollen (they are very cheap on ebay)

Presumably you don't drape wet washing around the room, or over the radiator? That is very conducive to condensation, damp and mould.

Hadn't thought about dust mites, she has no other allergies. She isn't ever lying down anywhere else - shes a very active child!

Will try that Piglet its an attic room, with only a storage heater, so does tend to get cold, we have started to heat it at bed time and in the morning. No wet washing up there ever. Will look at ionising air purifiers..

could it be nasal drip- has she had a cold? is it only when she lies down.
also try opening the windows in the day- let the air circulate.

attic rooms can get very cold, because they are often badly insulated, and there might be condensation, damp and mould on the coldest surfaces.

I find a low-power oil-filled electric radiator, overnight, in cold weather is helpful for coughs.
