Baby with a cold

I suspect this has been done before (many, many times!) but what advice can you give to a worried first time mum whose 10 week old PFB has his first cold?

We've got the Karvol plug in (says it's for three months and over, but LO is BIG - 91st percentile for weight and 98th for length - so I'm hoping it's okay); some saline drops to try to clear his nose; and we're giving calpol every evening (when we can get it in him, he's EBF so it's hard to get medicines into him)

He seems to be getting worse though (more screaming than usual before bed, louder snoring than normal now he's asleep, very clingy)

Any ideas for anything else we can try? And at what point should I worry and go to the GP? (I'd never go for a cold for myself; is it ever appropriate for a baby? What could a GP do?)

Thank you!

Go to the GP if you are worried. Better to see them and be reassured than miss something. Even then if you are not happy go back too. Things to watch for are poor feeding, excessive sleeping, vomiting/diarrhoea, high temp, fontanelle being depressed and rapid or difficult breathing.

Does he have a fever? (you mentioned giving Calpol) if so, you should definitely take him to the GP to be checked out at his age.

Have you tried taking him into a steamy bathroom to help clear his nose? You could try propping up one end of his cot/Moses basket to help him breathe at night.

Colds are awful for them at that age. Hope he feels better soon!

Yup, steamy bathroom twice a day (once for my shower; once for DPs), cot propped up (tho he pretty much refused to be in it last night & would only sleep if I was holding him)

He is sleeping and feeding more than usual, but DP and I both have colds too and tbh if I had the chance I would just be eating & sleeping too. When he's awake he's as aware and friendly as ever (gurgling away and grinning right now while I struggle to keep eyes open after sleepless night!)

So... I've calmed down now (easier to deal with in daytime?) & am just going to keep a close eye for now. If he gets listless, feverish o struggles to breathe I'll take him to docs.

Thank you Smile
