Argh. Is it normal for toddlers to be ill every bloody week since starting nursery???

Well, a playgroup thing, 3 mornings a week. DD (2) started few weeks ago and since had D&V, conjuctivitis, cold...after almost no illness at all for 2 years. I was so smug...still bf, iron immune system

And also-she had conjuctivitis, it ended about a week ago, but now she has runny nose etc and her eyes have been glued shut for the last couple of mornings- but no discharge during the day . Is it still the conjuctivitis that didn't clear up properly? New one?

I don't know winnybella. I had two at nurseery. One had no time off at all and the other had one week off.
However some kids just seem to get hit with everything going.

I hopw your DD will clear up soon. It's horrible when they go through this.

Very true I'm afraid and indeed BFing means nothing when faced with nursery. Little kids actually put their own snot up other kids noses . The upside is it is better for them to get a range of mild illnesses when young, very good for the immune system and they don't fall out of school every week for the 1st 6 months with bugs.

Bloody stressful for Mummy though - you have my fully sympathy and I hope your DC gets well soon.

DD started preschool in January. She has had slapped cheek, conjunctivitis, chicken pox, bronchiolitis, croup, 3 ear infections and several coughs/colds/non-specific viruses. At one point it was one virus out, one virus in.

Thankfully, she's been well for a few weeks now and although she is fighting a mild cold, she's doing it with her previous gusto. The preschool warned about it and when we saw the GP with the ear infections he specifically asked if she'd just started nursery. They say it's normal and often happens with only children who haven't been in a childcare setting before (dd exactly). Before the age of 3.5 she's had maybe one or two colds and nothing else so she just got it all at once.

It was miserable for a while and was a good 3 or 4 months of constant viruses but she is starting to manage it and hasn't had a day off for weeks. I suppose this is how she gains an immune system. Strangely tough (and I'm jinxing it) she's never caught any of the D&V bugs that go round preschool regularly.

yep, pretty similar here, ds2 picks up everything going either from ds1's school playground or from his playgroup. then passes it on to younger dd, who will hopefully be immune to it all by the time she's 3 and going to playgroup herself!

Thanks, you're making me feel much better. It's a bit worrying seeing your lo ill all the time, although she does bear it quite well, truth to be told.

Hasn't got much better in reception year.

DS had a crazy virus last Monday with ridiculously high temps and a headache and he spent all of last night throwing up.

Yep, totally normal. I went back to work for two days a week after DD1 and good job I was part-time! It was one illness after another for a whole term, finishing in Chicken Pox for Christmas.

I would never have managed a whole week at work and practically had my own chair in the surgery waiting-room. It did settle down though after that term. There honestly is light at the end of the tunnel

DD2 started nursery in January and she has had 3 chest infections, 1 resulting in a hospital visit, 1 ear infection, 1 throat infection and 2 bouts of conjunctivitus. She has had more antibiotics this year then in her whole life. She has been back at nursery for 2 weeks and she now has a cold.

When my DD started nursery she was 'sick' almost every week with one thing or another.... she had previously limited contact with other children so no real immunity to probably every day bugs germs etc..... it was a nightmare!! but they soon build up a resistance, just be patient.

Got the same problem, my little one is permantely with a runny nose and chest infections.

well bizarrely my DD (also a first born and also first time in regular contact with other kids) did OK for her first two terms and then it all hit her in term three (after the summer). she did move to a bigger setting from a little classroom so perhaps that is why. But she had coughs and colds all the time, glandular fever, ear infection, croup.... now she is back and hasnt yet done one week without missing a morning (and she only does three mornings a week!) since the beginning of term. i do hope it gets better as at this rate, she won't be getting much of an education!!! hope things get better for your DD, OP. :) 0h, and my DD was also breastfed until 2.5 - no help there!
