Does anyone have experience of the operation to fix a renal dilation?

DS is 8 months, and has a severe renal dilation on his right kidney. It was picked up when I was 21 weeks pregnant, and has been monitored ever since. DS has had monthly ultrasounds since he was 1 day old, but they have shown that the dilation is still there and still the same size.

He had a kidney function test and a test for urine reflux when he was 6 months old. Although they were both fine, the paediatric surgeon is worried because of the size of the dilation and the fact that it is not reducing in size. He therefore suggested yesterday that we should go ahead with the surgery to fix it, to avoid undetected reduction in kidney function.

So, at the moment DS is booked in to have the operation on 11 January at a specialist childrens' hospital here in Brussels. He will be about 9.5 months old.

I'm really worried about it all, even though I know it's a relatively common procedure. I just can't bear the thought of my lovely little boy going under general anaesthetic and having to be in hospital for a week. Hopefully we should have a private room, so I can stay with him the whole time, but I'm just really dreading it.

I guess I was just wondering if anyone else has been through this? And did your DS/DD cope with it OK? I guess I'd just like to get some reassurance that plenty of children have this and are fine.

I can't help, hope someone else can, but have my dd (11 months) has undergone a few ops..approx 9 times under anasthetic..and she has been absolutely fine even with a hole in her heart.
I'm sure your ds will be in good hands..good luck xx
