DD (aged almost 3) has had a deep cough, every night for the past month. She coughs occasionally in the day but will have a coughing attack about twice a night, plus once in the morning which wakes her up. I took her to the doctor's last week and they said 'oh, don't worry it'll go away', listened to her chest and said they didn't think it was athsma related as she didn't cough or wheeze after exercise. DD does have quite a loud, booming voice (a bit like a mini Brian Blessed minus the beard) so I don't know if that makes her cough sound worse.

I've done the vicks on her feet, damp towel on the radiator and raising the head end on her bed to limited effect, does anyone else have any tips? Is there any cough medicine that works? I tried the homeopathic one 'Sootha' which she said was disgusting and that she would rather cough.

Well, I get an asthma related cough and I have no cough or wheeze after exercise- it seems to come on after a cold and is mainly at night.

Recently dd (5) had similar night-time cough, and the doc said they couldn't rule out asthma as many children have no other symptoms. He gave her salbutamol liquid which DID seem to help, so I guess she is similar to me. But I think they don't diagnose asthma in children under 3?? (I could be wrong on that score!)

I second the Manuka Honey - we use the 15+stuff for sore throats and coughs and it really helps. :)

Joolyjoolyjoo- I think you are right, the doctor seemed reluctant to diagnose asthma, probably because of her age. I shall try out the honey when I can go to the health shop at the weekend.
