I have googled this and have a variety of reasons for mouth ulcers but wanted to see if you wise and wonderful women/men can shed some light.

my 16 month has recently become a bit fussy with food, not loving veg fruit etc. however she drinks diluted apple juice, has one banana a day and i disguise a least 2 portions of veg a day in her meals. so don't think it is vit c difficency.

she was a bit moody today and assumed she was teething because she has been dribbling, wouldn't settle , off her food and i noticed some spots on her tongue.

What do you think it is and what can i do!!

i don't think she has biten her tongue and i know she hasn't had anything too hot so have ruled that out x

There are a number of things it coul dbe with varying severity.

  1. Hand foot and mouth. Does she have any spots/blisters on the palms of her hands and soles of her feet?

  1. A primary Herpes infection. Has anyone she has been in contact with had a cod-sore infection recently. This is often preceeded by a temp spike and can be treated with oral anti-virals if caught early enough.

Both of the above would consist of multiple ulcers in the mouth (and not necessarily just on the tongue).

I am sure there are other things it could be.

In both cases - to help her you can avoid acidic foods, yoghurts can be soothing. Don't worry too much about food as eating could be v v painful. Prioritise fluids (including yoghurts) as dehydration is a risk in both cases in a child so young just therough the pain of drinking.

hand foot and mouth is really common with this age group especially if she goes to nursery or toddler groups. My DD also had some spots on her bottom when she had it.

I don't know what it might be, but my daughter had a virus in the summer which caused her to have loads of mouth ulcers. The dr's said to give calpol to relieve the discomfort and much to my daughters delight he told her she could have as many ice pops as she wanted!! So we made her homemade ones from sugar free orange squash. It was a good way to make sure she was taking in fluids.
