I have just finished reading Ronia the Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgren on the recommendation of my 10-year-old DN. Have blubbed all afternoon ( again) but it's a very satisfying, meaty book because it's not all about little girls (except for one, of course ) lots of dirty, lousy robbers, and amazing descriptions of nature in all the seasons! And if she won't read it, read it yourself!

DD2, a total bookworm, has recently read:

Anne of Green Gables
Harry Potter
Carrie's War
Holes
My sister Jodie (Jacqueline Wilson)

To encourage reading I'd choose modern literature to start with. Old fashioned language can be a turn-off for reluctant readers (like DD1).

My 9yo's refuse to read anything not modern at the moment, so are reading Clarice Bean and the Lucy Jessica Hartley series. They also enjoy Jacqueline Wilson.

My 9 year old is reading the Twilight series, Shakespeare(!), Sophie's World and Runemarks, all mixed in with a bit of Potter and Jane Blonde!!

The hardest thing I have is finding books that challenge her reading age, 17+ years, but doesn't bring too much inappropriate content.

DD2 has finished When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit and is reading Carrie's War. She read Goodnight Mr Tom recently as well. I think she fancies the idea of being an evacuee.
She also likes the Historical House series, Little House on the Prairie, A Traveller in Time and the Ladybird Adventures in History series from the Sixties.
Away from history she likes Harry Potter and school stories like Malory Towers and St Clares.

Artemis Fowl is an old favourite, being re-read for the umpteenth time (the series, not sure which one in particular at the moment)

The Hogfather

Just starting Pride and Prejudice

Alice in Wonderland
