How does this series compare to other books in terms of thematic level/suitability? My DD has read (amongst other things):
Northern Lights trilogy
Harry Potter
Tiffany Aching (although 4th put her off 5th)
A monster calls
Everything Rich Riordan has written

She really enjoyed Northern Lights and wants to read the Sally Lockhart books, but our local bookshop has them in the teenage section and I am not sure why.

Thanks!

I remember reading them at about 11. Not really as good as His Dark Materials, but worth a read. I don't remember feeling like they were too grown up.

As far as I remember Sally has a child out of wedlock (her lover dies) & there is stuff about prostitutes & opium addiction. The background to the story is very dark. Weirdly i think the series gets lighter/younger as it goes on.

Thanks (it is the OP)! I think I will hold off for a while.

We have them as teen books. I thought they were great and a good way to open discussions on more grown up themes.
