We have lots of picture books but she's just started school and is learning to read, and I'd like to get her into chapter books. She doesn't like excessively girly things/princesses particularly. She likes Roald Dahl's The Twits, but we tried the BFG and she lost interest, so need to keep it shorter/easier for now. But she likes funny, silly and magical.

(We've reread the Twits a few times but tbh I hate it, it's about two old twats abusing each other and not v nice!)

To my shame I actually work in publishing but know v little about this area. What does your 5yo love having read to them? TIA.

Second 'My naughty little sister' series although they are a little old fashioned (I change the odd word so it's makes sense!)

'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' has short but decent length chapters, and 'Georges Marvellous Medicine' is also good. I personally love 'The Twits' we listen to it in the at quite a bit!

We also read some of the 'Early Reader' series, lots of Horrid Henry's and other Francesa Simon books. Dd1 has just started p2 (she's about to turn 6) and can pretty much read these to herself now.

Get the roald dahl collection from book people and save any double for gifts, they also have lots of nice chapter book collections. We are reading Mary Poppins at the minute.

My six year old and I are working through 'my naughty little sister' together- we do one story a night and they are perfect!

The worst witch series and faraway tree series are both brilliant :-)

Iggy & Me by Jenny Valentine books are the modern day equivalent of My Naughty Little Sister.

Sheltie books by Peter Clover (Sheltie is a Shetland pony).

Mr Majeika series by Humphrey Carpenter.
