What classics have your 8/9 yr old boys enjoyed?

I'd like to introduce ds to some classics. He's enjoying Kidnapped at the moment.
Any other recommendations?

Narnia is the only one he's read, but then it did take me years to get him to read anything other than Thomas or Horrid Henry.

All my sons loved Stig of the Dump by Clive King at that age, also the Professor Branestawm books by Norman Hunter, and the Moomin books by Tove Jansson, and The Phantom Tolbooth by Norton Juster.

Not sure what defines "classic", but if Morpurgo counts ,then also Robert Westall Machine Gunners, Ronald Welch historical fiction e.g The Gauntlet

All the boys in my sons Y4 gang are reading The Hobbit at the moment. The teacher is too. Ds reads a few pages each night and some during 'quiet reading' time at school. He's loving it.

Keeping an eye on this for DS1 (able 6.5). Very happy to see Green Knowe and Swallow and Amazons mentioned, both faves of mine. He has already read and enjoyed 101 Dalmatians. We tried Narnia a few months ago and he wasn't hooked but will try again in a bit. Have enjoyed the abridged Just Williams; at 7-8 the unabridged ones could be good fodder!

Well it does say "classics", if it said "mindless pirate/dragon/beast themes" then the answers would be very different! And probably no one would need to ask
