Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert is often referred to as one of the best written French books.

L'Etranger by ALbert Camus is sometimes used as an level text and is short and very good

Both of these are good French literature but they given views of France that are dated.

A lovely story (with lovely film) Jean de Florette by Marcel Pagnol (also set in the past)

English books set in France:

Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks (WW1)
Chocolat by Joanne Harris (also other books by her)

and also checkout goodreads - they actually have lists for reqeusts like this!

Loving that Goodreads site - thank you (although could lose myself in it for hours)! And for helpful suggestions, list looking much more respectable now.

Le Ble en Herbe (Green Wheat) by Colette - I read this in French when I was an older teen. It was written in the 1920s, can't remember now how dated it is though!

www.amazon.co.uk/Ble-En-Herbe-Colette/dp/2290307149/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1363629905&sr=1-1&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

It's available in French on Amazon, not sure if the English translation is available

Bonjour Tristesse (Hello Sadness) by Francoise Sagan - written in the 1950s

www.amazon.co.uk/Bonjour-Tristesse-Penguin-Great-Loves/dp/014103291X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1363629405&sr=1-1&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Looks like it is available in French only - on Amazon at least

I loved Jean de Florette & the sequel Manon des Sources
Also My Father's Glory, and My Mother's Castle - all 4 by Marcel Pagnol. I have the English versions but they are all available in French

A Wild Herb Soup by Emilie Carles - autobiographical account of one rural French girl's life from the early 1900s onwards - a wonderful book
