I was trying to track down a childhood book last week and someone on here recommended jan pienkowski books. Well since then, thanks to amazon, i now own 6 of them! 2 of which i have no intention of ever giving to my kids till they are adults. Ok never. They are mine! I am obsessed with the pop ups and bottechelli's b&b in particular is just stunning. I would be heartbroken if it got torn. I can't stop looking at it! I am totally in love with it!

Oh dear. As well as the pop-ups there are beautiful illustrated editions of loads of important stories, sets of little words books, you'll need all of Meg and Mog too, this is going to be expensive. I liked A Necklace of Raindrops when I was little - stories by Joan Aiken. (No link because reviewers on Amazon are raising doubts in my mind about which edition actually has the JP illustrations.)

I don't know Bottechelli's B&B and it looks like it's out of print - what's going on there, then?

It's an amazing book. You open it into a pop up b&b. The covers fold round and you tie them together to make a circle if you get me. It's got loads of rooms with characters from famous artworks in them. For example michael angelo is brushing his teeth and venus di milo is in the shower! So much detail. Gutted though coz mine is missing a hidden paper that gives a tour around the b&b. Ah well.

Grr.

I always wanted a book that opened like that with a ribbon! So does it take the artwork away from his usual style? I'm going a googling. Back later.

Necklace of Raindrops does have the Jan Pienkowski illustrations, and the stories are fabulous too. The Kingdom Under the Sea, the second PienkowskiAiken collaboration is also wonderful.

You will also need the Pienkowski/Walser collaborations - Grimms fairy tales, the thousand and one nights. You should take a look at the illustrated old testament - words from KJV of the Bible with astonishing cartoon illustrations - think Meg and Mog but even more daring combination of text and image.

Grimm's fairy tales doesn't seem to be in print at the moment but is available for preorder on Amazon. Some amazing pictures if you google it.

We have an absolutely beautiful Pienkowski version of the Christmas story. Really lovely.

I also have my old copies of the Necklace of Raindrops and Kingdom Under the Sea, which I am now reading to DD. Love them.
