Reccommendations for 6 year old boy?

girlafraid · 28/03/2011 07:53

My nephew is doing really well at reading at school and really enjoys books

They don't really have many books at home so I would like to buy him a little collection for his birthday. I recently bought him a Dr Seuss collection which he loved.

Any recommendations for a little bundle? Could be fiction or non fiction

TIA

Captain underpants or any Jeremy Strong seem popular with both sexes at that age. Alternatively, Roald Dahl.

Horrid Henry is popular with my GS.

Austrosaus

Mr gum

Non-fiction also good - we like the usborne lift the flap books and there is a whole series of these which are good (www.amazon.co.uk/Animal-Encyclopedia-Reference-Dorling-Kindersley/dp/1405316055/ref=pd_sim_b_6)?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

The Mr. Gum books.

Or Jeremy Strong.

Avoid Captain Underpants, it is full of spelling mistakes.

Mixed Up Fairy Tales and Magical Book of Mix Ups are both very popular with young boys - as is Humphrey Carpenter's Mr Majeika series.

I would second the Magic Treehouse collection My 2 ds's (4 and 6) looove these - we read a couple of chapters at a time at bedtime stories, ds1 can almost read them himself as well.

How about the How to Train Your Dragon series? DD1 (7yo) has just worked her way through this series, and really enjoyed it, except the last one, which she said was too scary. But ten, she is a bit of a wuss...............

Beast quest- easy to read and seem to interest mainly boys.

For non-fiction consider Ladybird books which are back in WHS. Volcanoes & solar system etc.

Have you tried the Hunt for Treasure series? these would make a very cool pressie, as you can have the books personalised to your nephew's name. They worked great with my son, he read all five books in about 2 days!

Mr Majeika series by Humphrey Littleton - about a teacher who is in fact a wizard and flies into school on a magic carpet

and for a bit of fun Mixed up Fairy Tales and Magical Book of Mixups by Nick Sharratt and Hilary Robinson is great for this age group.

I'd also highly recommend Jeremy Strong and the Horrid Henry books. The latter are very very funny! Also, it may be a bit early for him, but I've just posted //www.eeekthealien.com online

It's about an alien who runs away to Earth because he loves football and the World Cup is on. It's free to read chapter by chapter on the website, and is similar in style to the other books I've mentioned in terms of pace. (It will be available via Amazon in the next month or two..) If not for now then maybe in a few months?

Roald Dahl- can't go wrong with those. Ds (just 7) quite enjoys Horrid Henry (I hate 'em), and likes Jeremy Strong (esp my brothers unerpants series), The Lion The Witch & the wardrobe and loves Harry Potter (first one only so far)...

Depends on his actual reading level, and do you want something for now or something for the future?
DS is nearly 7yo, supposedly a free-reader, is described by teachers as "loves literacy" and yet lacks stamina for anything beyond comics (like Calvin and Hobbes, Tintin and Asterix) and Horrid Henry. But he enjoys all them very much. Captain Underpants & Roald Dahl (etc.) he might be ready for in next 2-3 years.

Warlock Watson by Dick King-Smith is an obscure but brilliant one.
