Book for DGD age 14?

Wasn't sure whether to put this here on in adult fiction

I'd like to buy my goddaughter a classic book for Christmas. She's 14, G&T, sophisticated in an intellectual way but not too grown up yet. Any good suggestions?

Jane Austen seems to work well with this age: Pride and Prejudice is always a good one to start with.

Daphne Du Maurier is another possibility; if she hasn't read Rebecca, I'd go for that.

Or Gone With the Wind. Or Vanity Fair (if she is a really confident reader).

Jane Eyre, if she's not read it yet?

I Capture the Castle? DD1 loved that. Or Jane Eyre. Rumer Godden's The Greengage Summer is also very good. Or, if she hasn't read them, the Flambards series.

Rosie: Note to Self by Clare Conner (with G P Taylor). A ripping, contemporary story line and based on the story of Ruth. Its a great read, has superb characters in it and if there is any justice it would be made into a British Film! I cannot recall the publisher but if you stick the title in amazon you will find it right enough. Not written for children but totally safe and appropriate material for about 12 upwards I'd say.

Trying to do a link ... (for the first time ever) for you ..

Some good suggestions here thanks.

LittlePushka thanks for the link. That's so bizarre - GDG has just moved to Northumberland where that book is set! You say it's based on the story of Ruth and 2 reviewers on Amazon refer to it as a Christian book. It's not actually religious though, is it? GDG is a confirmed atheist and would be very cross with me for giving her a 'religious' book (ironic given our relationship!)

GP Taylor used to be a vicar before becoming a Catholic last year.

Not religious as such! There is a vicar in it though... I would not have made the connection had I not been told first!
