how fast does baby grow in the last few weeks?

Hi, I have just had a scan at 34 weeks and been told that the baby is large - 7lbs already. then the doctor told me that he wants me to have a c/s at 39 weeks. My first baby was big too (10.4lbs) and I had complications.
So even if I have a c/s at 39 weeks what weight will it be?? any clues welcome.
I don't understand why I am having big babies, I am very average size and have not put on much weight at all.
But I suppose the fact that I am carrying a jumbo baby round does explain why I am exhausted!

How have they estimated the weight of the baby? I had a scan at 39 weeks and the sonographer said DS2 weighed about 7lb 8oz. He was born 7 days later and weighed 9lb 12oz!! So either scans are very inaccurate or he gained over 2lbs in a week. In my experience my midwife was the best judge of the size of my babies and told me that they were big. I was also concerned about having another big baby, ds1 was 9lb 11oz, but the second time was a lot easier, shorter and easier to push out. I'd be absolutely sure about the weight before going ahead with a cs.

I agree kama - at one stage I was put under consultant care because my baby was measuring 'at least six weeks' too large. Came one week late and weighed 7 lb 6 oz!!!

cathcat, i thinks its about an ounce a day. I had fairly large babies - my daughter was 2 weeks over and 9lb 13oz. At the time the doctor didnt think size was an issue as the head was normal size (what do men know about labour!) Although it is a valid point. I had minor complications with her and she was eventually born by ventouse. My 2nd child was estimated to be the same weight (scans were both spot on to the ounce i have to say) but was born 5 days early at 8lb 12 and the delivery was as good as it could be. I wonder why your doctor has suggested c/s as opposed to induction? Because you didnt say what your complications were.

With ds2 (3rd baby) I was told all the way throught the pregnancy he would be a big baby, he was born 1 week early and was 7lb 2oz. Don't know what made them think he was big, He was the pregnancy I put least weight on (still in normal clothes up to about 6 months) and the other 2 weights were 7lbs 1oz and 6lbs 13oz, so all about the same.

Estimates of baby weight is a very inexact thing. I've never heard of one estimate that was even close to the actual weight.

Also, size of the baby is not the only factor in how your birth will go. Maybe your doctor is more worried about the complications you had last time?

I'm at the same stage as you cathcat. Check out the due in September thread. EVERYONE (with maybe one or two annoying exceptions ) is exhausted. Being exhausted does not mean you'll have a big baby.
