How quickly were you released from hospital after birth?

Hi,

I just wondered how long afterwards I could get out as I hate hospitals and would much rather be at home if I can. So can you tell me what sort of birth you had and how quickly you went home.

16 hours, could have gone earlier but had to wait for lots of diff professionals to come in, sign off for my health and baby's health and read lots of leaflets out to us about cot death, breastfeeding etc.

My doula said you can walk out whenever you want. You are not legally required to stay so they can sign you out. Wish I'd known this first time round as I was hanging around for ages.

Have you thought about a homebirth?

Other than that, if you are planning to breastfeed, just make sure you have someone (preferably not a midwife!) observe the latch before you go home.. that was a big mistake I made.

DD1 - Would have been 2 hours, but there was a car crash so Paed was caught up with the injured, so was 10 hours.

DD2 - 5 days then alternate days to SCBU.

DD3 - 24 hours.

I had dd at 9.20am and was released at 7pm .

I had a emergency section and a prem jaundiced baby and blood transfusions for myself, I was out after a week. A warning though-they told me in the morning I'd be out that day and my dad made arrangements for a posh car to take me and dd home. Posh car arrived when midwives had said we would be able to leave. Posh car left an hour later without us in it as we were still waiting for people to sort out drugs/sign forms/tell us not to smoke/give us a leaflet on contreception. Eventually it was dark before we left.

I will be very disapproving if that happens again this time!

dd - 3 days
ds - 6 hours as soon as i arrived at hospital i asked to speak to someone about the 6 hour discharge.

Both hospitals that I've been in have been keen to get everyone home as soon as possible and free up the beds! The biggest hold-up is usually getting the baby checked out by the paed, as they don't prioritise routine checks for the healthy normal babies (and quite right too).

I had DS at 18.44 ,left the hospital aroung 10.30 that night. We had to take him to a community hospital to get his checks a couple of days later. Third baby.

I had c sect Thursday morning went home Saturday lunchtime.

overdid it and ended up haemoraging in the bathroom and had to take various antibiotics for almost a year...was v ill wouldnt reccomend it at all.

C-section thursday morning and discharged on friday morning.

Way too quickly in my opinion and was very much pressured into it by nasty midwife who said she wanted my bed.

Baby born 2244 walking out the hospital entrance at 3am...I was not staying there a moment later. They tried to tell me I wasnt in established labour (back to back 48hrs in painful labour) 5 minutes after insisiting I was moved to delivery he was born.

In all honestly I would have like to have been discharged to the local midwife led unit but they wouldnt let me transfer til the next morning (which I knew would turn into the afternoon) so I said fine...I'll go home. Midwife who delivered him was lovely and understood why I wouldnt say so I was discharged.

Baby had 24hr check by a community midwife at the unit as they were helping with feeding

tracey theyd left bits of my placenta in as well i was sooooooooooill for ages it really was too early.

The earliest I've got out has been around 8hrs. Baby born around 6:30am, released at around 2:30pm ish. Straightforward delivery.

At the hospital that I delivered my babies at it was normally after 2pm before they dished out your notes to take home so couldn't go before then. So if your baby was born after 2pm then it would be about 24hrs if you were waiting to receive your notes before going home.
I think they liked you to stay for at least 4-6hrs for observation.

5.5 hours. Ds2 born at 10:30am and out by 4pm. I hate hospitals too, so 3 & 4 were born at home!

I hate hospitals too and wanted to be out as quickly as possible. In the end I stayed for about 36 hours and was quite glad of it. I booked a private room (but still NHS) and it was well worth it (IMO).

Having said that, the main reason I wanted to leave was the conflicting breast feeding advice. Had that been ok I probably would have stayed an additional night because all the additional help I received was excellent, the food was good and it gave DH the chance to have some sleep before we came home.

DD - C-section, 2 days. Probably left too soon as DD had trouble feeding and was later readmitted.

DS - gave birth around 9am left at 4pm. Had a straightforward birth. Lovely midwife at the Royal Free arranged for the paed to come and check him over on the delivery suite so didn't need to be admitted to the ward.

elective cs monday 10.30, discharged wed lunchtime. dd2 on scbu so ended up stuck in hosp till sun. 2nd dd so would have been thrilled to get out so early. happy was not my first as I got absolutely no bf advice/help or even any help with regards a baby generally. Mind you, the first time round wasnt much help either with regards to taking care of/feeding a baby. Was in a week that time also due to my eclampsia

Ds1 - 5 days. Spent hanging around for stupid blood test. Then they lost it and had to come in again the following day. 5 days of terrible food and sharing a room with a screaming banshee. Was a wreck.

Ds2 - Born 8:30 am. Said straight after wanted to go home. Had to wait for paed so sent to a ward. Dh went home for lunch, kip etc as no sign (was well fed up - whole point was to gather my strength before the hell of the first night). In end we gathered our things to walk out at 5:30 since I wanted to get home for ds1's bedtime. Staff all freaked out (expected me to stay overnight after all! despite asking all day long when we could go) and paed appeared 15 minutes later. Got home in time for stories and cuddle.

DD - Born 3:00 am. Again said straight after wanted to go home (for breakfast). MW said we could go home as soon as we'd cleaned ourselves up. Then overruled by consultants so had to camp out in the delivery room until change of shift when they couldn't kick us out fast enough. Home by 10am.

With both of mine was out within 7-8 hours.

I wish wish wish I had stayed at home longer as I believe going to hospital when I did set the wheels in motion for the emergency c-sect I eventually had.

Sunday - Started with Braxton Hicks on sunday night which went away again on monday.

Wednesday - Had a show on wednesday morning and thought waters might be leaking. BH/contractions started up and became more regular throughout the day. Needed to use the electric thing on my back (can't for the life of me remember what it's called)

Wednesday night - decided to go in as contractions were coming every 7mins and I wasn't sure if waters were leaking or not. Stayed in hospital.

Thursday- Put on drip to increase frequency and strength of contractions.

Friday afternoon - emergency c-sect as 'failure to progress'

Came home the following Tuesday. You have to stay 3 days after a c-sect, I think but I had to stay another day as baby was a bit jaundiced and I had a bleed through the incision.

Perfectly healthy after straightforward birth first time and still had to stay 5 days (very long time ago).

Second daughter born 10 at night, left in the morning.

Released on the third day with twins after caesarean.

ds1: born just after midnight Tue, went home mid-morning Thu. Like you I REALLY wasn't looking forward to staying in hospital but ds1 was slightly jaundiced and wouldn't feed so we stayed in for him (I had a very easy 1st birth and would have been happy to leave in the morning). Actually it was good as I got some help with this tiny newborn that I knew nothing about and I was quite happy being there.

12 hours after emergency c-section. They needed the bed.
