Childbirth

How soon to mention the type of birth i want?

I'm just over 9 weeks gone now and have a booking in appointment with midwife next week. Would it be reasonable for me to tell her that i want a homebirth then? I'm fully prepared to have to fight for this, as my first pregnancy was an emergency c-sec at 28 weeks, and my second was at full term and i was near enough bedbound as they put a monitor on babys head. I really do not want to go through that again and would dearly love a home water birth. The idea of being in hospital away from dc does not appeal in the slightest.

So, the sooner the better or leave it a while?

I would tell them at the first appointment and keep on at them thereafter.

Good luck.

The midwife asked me if I was planning a homebirth at my booking in appointment. I'd imagine it's a standard question they ask so that they can plan your care effectively. I said no (as I don't want a homebirth), but I don't think there'd have been any problems at all if I'd said yes.

It was suggested to me at my booking appt as an option but didn't have to commit at that point. I would bring it up if they don't given that it is something you feel strongly about. Good luck!

At my booking appointment:

MW: Hello.
Me: Hello.
MW: So, are you having this baby at home or in hospital?
Me: Er... Home.
MW: Ok.

I was pleasantly surprised.

Good luck, and congratulations.
