my longest contraction with DS3 was about 40 seconds, I also said no internals for him - but did agree to one when I first got to the hospital - just to make sure I was in labour (as I didn't believe I actually was) - didn't have any more for the duration

Everyone is different. I guess it doesn't matter as long as they get the job done.

oh - and before I had my one internal the MW told me that I was definitely in labour, even though they were really short contractions - told me there was no doubt lol

A good MW knows that rules of thumb are only that -- generalisations. So it depends partly how much of a jobsworth you have whether they take you seriously. With 2nd+ time mothers, you usually know what you're feeling, and they take you more seriously, I reckon.
