Anal fissure - please cheer me up!

Am a month into the nightmare of an anal fissure. It was excruciating for the first week, then I didn’t eat much for a couple days (also took stol softeners) which got my stools very loose and were then almost painless. Did about 10 days like this, eating carefully. Then I don’t know why but just had what I wanted for lunch in the pub. Had a painful bm the next day and haven’t been right since. Have tried not eating but it made me feel ill after about 36 hours. Pain is on and off, occurs with most BMs and then burns for about 5 hours afterwards. It isn’t as bad as that first week, but I don’t feel like it’s getting better either. Could someone please reassure me that I will get through this (with careful eating). Feeling pretty down. Thanks in advance.

Hi jalliej,

We're so sorry to hear how painful this is for you - we can't offer much in the way of helpful advice but definitely do not take iron tablets; they seem to make symptoms much worse in our experience.
If you'd like to post in general health you may find some other users how can offer you some support.

Ouch ! It took me about 10 weeks after birth for them to not hurt , sounds like a long time but will hopefully go quickly !
No advice I'm afraid apart from stay very very hydrated , it may help a little bit

Oh they're so awful aren't they Flowers.

You're on the right track with stool softeners. Yes, eating carefully should help them heal.

I had them for 10 years, my IBS never let them heal. But I had botox 18 months ago, eat less than I used to and it seems to have done the job.

Please go straight to the doctor if you haven’t already!! They will prescribe you cream for it which you can’t get from the pharmacy.

Had the exact same problem- was hell and worse than the usual birth! Which i’d gone to doc sooner. Seriously it won’t clear up for ages otherwise and will keep happening.

Try and get an emergency ap tomorrow! Then it will feel better in literally a day or two. Flowers

You poor thing, I had one that was felt so much worse than my really bad tear. Definitely see your doctor ASAP, use the stool softeners and stay well hydrated. This too shall pass.

I got those with my first child and they didn't clear up for years. I remember thinking they were going to be the end of me they were that bad but they are now just a memory. So don't worry you will get them sorted out. Get the cream and prop your feet up on a stool or something that brings your knees up when you are going to the toilet. That takes the pressure off. Also take paracetamol about half an hour before you go. I let mine get really bad before I went to the docs. If you haven't been yet go and get the strong cream before they get any worse.

Had a fissure after first birth. Jesus Christ they hurt!! Mine lasted about 4 months - it would feel like a tearing pain when I went then it'd throb and burn for 5-6 hours afterwards. I started taking 2-3 sachets of Movicol/Laxido a day to make stools v soft (basically loose) and kept that up for months. I then weaned down to 1 sachet a day and have actually continued to take 1 a day ever since (he's 3 nearly!) as I had IBS before and find that 1 Laxido has eradicated all my IBS symptoms! It really does take time for them to heal so make sure you keep up your routine and drink lots and lots for at least 6 weeks before changing things up!

Mother of god I had a fissure - worst pain in my life. Felt like I was shitting bramble branches, blacking out, the works.

Get yourself to the docs for the magic cream mentioned upthread, amd also I found the painkiller suppositories helped. DO NOT suffer in silence or let them fob you off. I got graphic af until the male gp referred me to the specialists! Good luck xx
