Childbirth

Think my waters have broken - what happens next?

Felt a sharp pinch in my vagina area and then a small gush of water - is this my waters breaking?
And will I have to be induced if I don't go into labour imminently?

Congrats

Is it your first? Give the hospital a call and let them know.

If it's a subsequent baby, just be v aware. My waters broke and I thought I had ages. About 20 mins later and only 2 contractions and ds was born Grin.

It might be that the waters have only partially broken too - there are probably some more the other side of the baby (can't remember the name, is it hind waters?).

Either way, there is some time limit they apply before they induce after waters break just to monitor you not picking up an infection but it's been so long since I gave birth, I can't tell you what it is!

Are you at term?

Yes, am 38 and a half weeks and is my second.
Am pretty sure that my waters have broken now as I keep leaking.

Not too panic-ed about being induced now as I've had several painful contractions, so guess it's all starting. Can't get to hospital until after 8am though as DH will need to drop DD off at nursery first.

Don't leave it too late! What would you have done if it was the middle of the night? Is there no-one else who could have dd?

Fingers crossed for a safe delivery!

Thanks all.
Contractions not regular, so not too worried.
On way to hospital once DH has bought provisions from Waitrose.
Was booked in to be assessed whether I could use birth centre or not today at 3. Hope they assess me earlier and let me in!

Well, went in for monitoring and was only 1cm dilated. Managed to be assessed and accepted at birthing centre if I went into labour within 24 hours. If not, baby would have to be given antibiotics intravenously and I would have to be induced. Home for lunch and regular contractions from 1pm. Started worrying when I felt urge to bear down and told to go to birthing centre for assessment.
Arrived at 3.15pm. Disappointed to be told that although contractions were hard and frequent, I was only 2cm dilated.
Discussed sending me home. Around 4pm uncontrollable urge to bear down but told I must resist. I just couldn't and wanted drugs. Experienced midwife came in and told me to lie on top of beanbag to examine me. They could see the baby's head! Relief that I was able to push with contradictions now. The rest was easy. DD2 born at 4.20pm. Asleep after a time suckling on breast and we're now waiting to be discharged at 10pm.

Thanks for all your well wishes.
Xx
