i had a 12 hr labour with dd,gas and air in the last 30 mins when i got to hospital, utter panic and adrenalin got me through.
with ds i had read an ina may book, felt very prepared for labour, accepting of the contractions ect,i had 3 days of twinges, felt like strong braxton hicks,by the 4th day i asked my mw if she thiught anything was happining,so she had a look and gave me a sweep, (i had been 1cm dialated).i went home, went to bed,had a few twinges in the night.i woke up at 8am with a very strong contraction, called mw who said to wait an hr or two and then come in...
at 9.01am ds was born,we just made it to the mw unit in time,as he was born within 10 mins of arriving!

anyone else have a similar experiance? i felt as though i was in shock for a long time (ds is now 3 months) and i feel like im just coming to terms with it,am i a complete mad woman,or is it normal to feel a sense of loss of your labour?!

disclamer.i know it could be worse,i know people have terrible long drawn out labours, thats why i feel i cant say this in rl.

I think shock is a natural feeling to have in those circumstances.

DS2 was 1hr 45, but expected, as my previous labour had been pretty quick.

DC3 is due in July and I fully expect an hour or less and therefore will be fine with it.

FOr you having a previous long labour, it is only natural to have come as a shock.

I think with any labour & birth there is a strong possibility of feeling a sense of loss.

With my 3rd DC, I didn't have a very short labour, but for some reason I felt that the baby I gave birth to wasn't the one I was expecting iyswim. It's all very strange, and possibly related to PND, but I took a little bit longer to bond with her than the other two.

Birth is so mind-blowing and we have so many expectations that it's no wonder we sometimes struggle to come to terms with the experience.

when i had ds3 i had a similar situation. woke up in the early hours of the morning having a very painful, very long contraction
ds3 was born 48 minutes later.

was a planned homebirth, but neither the midwives or the ambulance (who dp called when i said i needed to push) arrived before ds3 was born

the labour itself was actually incredibly calm and i wasn';t scared or anything, it all went beautifully and i actually quite liked being just us

but yes, we were both really pretty shellshocked tbh, it didn't really feel liek i had been through labour or had any preparation for it. just woke up, intense pain, baby!!

very weird

thanks, for all your quick repliesSmile

hormones i had the same feeling with my first child, its odd,as ive never managed to put it into words, and you've summed it up perfectly, thankyou.

oddly enough,i had prepared myself for a shorter labour, they run in my family, until a mw said id be 'lucky' to have such a short and easy labour as i had with dd this timeHmm

hark im not sure, but now youve mentioned it,i will ask Smile

edgar my mum was the same, but she never seems bothered about it.she's also a bit of a truth stretcher, and likes to have 'one-up' on you so im never quite happy talking about stuff like this with her. Hmm

I had a much quicker labour with my DD as it was 8 hours from first CX to delivery

My second stage was just 3 minutes long and I remember being in utter shock, so much so that the next day I asked the MW to talk me through it as I was feeling very bewildered

I am sure you can get a debrief about your birth

With my first, I had a 2 day run up to labour, then 10 hours of active labour with an hour of pushing

Was fully expecting the same second time around ... DD shot out in 2 pushes

I woke up in labour with contractions 4 minutes apart - we got to hospital at 8.30 (after they told me I couldn't possibly have slept through established labour starting) and was 8cm dilated on arrival.

DS2 arrived weighing 11lb 3oz just over an hour later.

My first labour was three days and second was 1 hr 19 mins. Very different. All fairly traumatic second time around and still get awful flash backs when on the motorway! I'm hoping it'll start to fade!
